I AM ALIVE

I didn't expect to find Thailand

When I booked my flight to Thailand, I did not know what to except. I was just going for a couple of months to travel with the guy I was in love to. I wanted to live a spiritual low-cost travel adventure where I could relax and maybe fix our broken and toxic relationship. I thought that was what we needed. However, when I arrived in Thailand, I had a strange feeling I took the wrong decision. I spent the first two days in bed because the jet lag had hit me so bad, while my friend was out partying every night thinking I was a fool staying in the hotel. After those days struggling, I decided to get up and follow him to a Floating Market which was supposed to be "best floating market" in Thailand according to the tuk tuk driver who became my friend's best drinking mate. When we arrived at the entrance, we realized they brought us to the most expensive one, about 50 European Euros. I was furious because we had just spent more than 20 euros taxi to get there. You might think that 70 euros is not that much, but if you look at Thailand's prices and if you travel on a budget, that was a big amount of money. After that day, I was even more sure about my mistake to travel with this person because he was toxic for me and didn't want to have the same travel experience as me. Anyways, I carried on with our travel plan, and the next day we took a bus and went north to a town called Ayutthaya. It was a famous temple town where we could fully dive into the Thai culture and meet a lot of locals. I was excited for this new start. However, when we arrived there, my friend just wanted to rent a motorbike and go visit on its own while I was planning to get a local guide and do another temple experience. We definitely were on a different vibe, we started to fight, I started to feel homesick and wanting to go home; but then something unexpected happened. I was in the terrace writing my blog when a woman on her 60s came to sit next to me. I smiled at her and she started talking to me in a broken English; from her accent I immediately understood she was French, and I switched the conversation to her native language. She started telling me the story of her life and I was so fascinated; her husband died the year before, and she decided to stop grieving and do what she have always wanted to do: see the world. She bought a one-way ticket and she started travelling on her own. I was so impressed and start asking questions like: "Aren't you afraid to travel on your own?" or "Don't you feel lonely sometimes?". She smiled at me and she said these words which will remain with me forever: "Honey, I am not alone. I meet amazing people every day who I share this journey with. I don't feel lonely because I am in peace, I love myself and my own company. I am so grateful I have the freedom to decide what to do every day, who to spend time with, and where to go. I am happy and I feel so alive". I was speechless after this answer, I did not except it. I stayed up all night trying to find a sense on what and why I received this powerful message. Somebody had sent her to me to help me. Finally, the next day I made a decision. I changed my flight back to Italy for one month before I did previously planned, I wrote a letter to my friend, and I took off travelling for 2 weeks on my own. I had the courage to leave behind what was no longer serving me, I chose myself and I set myself free. And one day, on the top of a mountain in the Northern Thailand, I found myself crying for no reason. I was happy and feeling ALIVE.
