Making a local connection Peru

In May of 2019, I bought a flight to Peru with the intention of visiting one fo the seven world wonders, Machu Picchu. My quest took 10 days and I know I wanted to emerge myself into the culture, the locals, the cuisine, art and most of all the beliefs and way of life. I booked a 4-night walking tour taking the Salkantay Trail into the Machu Picchu ruins and my live was changed. It’s not easy walking 20-30kms a day (on foot) or climbing altitudes of +4000ft above sea level. But through the mindless walking, you take the time to learn about your body, listen to your inner voices and continue the trek into this beautifully break taking place. The landscapes we saw and and small milestones we had, really helped me shape what I was after in this world. We would reach altitudes so high that you could almost touch the fun and feel it’s warm beams, then around the mountain peaks we would have to layer on clothes, as it started to snow. It was such a wild experience! Our last night before heading into the ruins, we were enlightened of the history or culture of the locals. What is meant to to be an soul in the skies, on earth and the underworld. The representation of animals in of which defined who you were, the ways each and every one of us should remember, when giving back to the world. We made a toast, and oath and promise to the gods of this sacred land, that we will love all living things, be appreciative of life and never take that for granted. The next morning we arrived at the ruins at 6:00am. The sun peeked through the clouds and we were here. When you are there, only then can you understand and take in all the emotion and life before your eyes. This beautiful natural rock formation is so high from the rest of the world, so well maintained and surrounded by nature’s finest air quality (haha). We completed this experience with a couple hikes into the clouds and the view was alarmingly scary, but also worth every challenging step. For those who don’t know, I’m very fearful of heights, but I asked myself, “what is life, if you don’t take that extra step?” Am I living to die or fighting to live a life full of adventure, each and every day. I challenge you, to always take that jump! Because if you don’t for yourself, who will?
