Iguana Island

Aside from snakes, I would not consider myself afraid of reptiles, at least not up until I stepped foot on an island overflowing with very large iguanas. Let's just say I did not leave the beach. While my parents, and one of my friends, were exploring the island and taking pictures with the dragon-like creatures, I plopped myself in the safety of the shallow water and conversed with a few of the locals who were our tour guides for the day. I could tell they loved the water and loved showing us foreigners a little piece of their paradise. Before they boated us to iguana island, they had taken us snorkeling at a reef near a drop off. Other than my new fear of iguanas, I am also quite terrified of deep water. It isn't exactly the deep water that scares me, but more so what I can't see that lurks down there. So I stayed as far away from the drop off as possible while I went snorkeling for the first time. It. Was. Incredible. Even though I'm not a fan of super deep water, I love the ocean and (most of) its creatures. Spending most of my time at our beach house since I was seven has fueled my love for the ocean and the island lifestyle. I was absolutely captivated by all of the colorful fish. We don't exactly have super clear water or colorful fish in North Carolina. The reef itself was beautiful too. With little cave-like features and different rocky formations there were so many places to explore. While I was looking around, one of the tour guides who was snorkeling with us, motioned for us to gather around a small open tunnel underneath part of the reef. Our tour guide proceeded to dive into the tunnel, shocking everyone, and chasing out a shark, shocking everyone even more. Most of the group immediately back pedaled trying to get back to where the boat was anchored. I surprised myself by not being very scared (still surprised as I sit here writing this). The shark was probably about 6 feet long and absolutely beautiful. It seemed very relaxed and slowly swam around, not bothering any of us. The tour guide then popped up, told us a little about the shark, said he was going to try and get the "mama", and dove back down to the reef. Thankfully, he had no luck finding the other shark. I was not too keen on seeing how big it would be. I like sharing my travels in story styles (like the above snippet) but I also love doing reviews for restaurants, museums, sightseeing areas, and hotels. I’m a pretty versatile writer so I try to do a little bit of everything.
