It was a hot summer day at the west edge of Europe, and she was deeply in love. Exams had just finished, leaving the light feeling that this had been one of the best semesters. Nevertheless, the shiny look in her eyes was due to the great adventure she was about to experience: in a few weeks, she would be catching a plane to spend the next six months of her life in the classic and cold city of Budapest. Was there any reason not to celebrate? That night she invited her boyfriend to have dinner out. She hadn’t been paying him much attention, so it was time to make up for that negligence. The chosen place was a city mall she had never been to. They got there early, and the sun hadn’t even set yet, so they decided to have a coffee in a pleasant esplanade outside. The environment between the two was slightly heavy. She was happy to be there, but it seemed like he didn’t feel the same way. So, she stated: “I feel like you deserve an apology. I haven’t been present in the last days, but I miss you, and I would like us to spend more time together.” His reaction was far from what she was expecting. With a sad and somehow aggressive look, he fitted her in the eyes and said: “Yeah, about that, I think this isn’t working”. The next few seconds were of deep confusion. What was he talking about? Her heart shrunk and she was having trouble getting air into her lungs. The hungry sensation that used to occupy her stomach suddenly disappeared and all she could feel was an intense nut. She collapsed in tears. The next weeks were hard to handle… * Two months later, there she was, alone, catching a plane. No, her heart was not fixed, but her will of moving on was stronger than that. She started softly and timidly, met a lot of people and made some new friends. Every day was a new opportunity for any 21 years old girl: parties and drinking, traveling around Europe as easily as taking a bus… the world was in her hands. Every single day she fought that sad emotion that seemed reluctant to leave. Until one day, when everything changed. It was the biggest trip she had done during those months, Ljubljana. The landscapes were beautiful, and it seemed like the perfect escape from those depressing days spent at home. A friend had told her about this bar in the center, the best in town, so they decided to take a look. Her plans for the night? Dance, drink, and dance again. As they arrived, while the girls went for the beers, the boy found them a place to sit. Once she was back, the group was suddenly huge, with four other guys effusively chatting with her friend. It started with a joke between her, a Portuguese girl, and a Colombian guy. Could they, talking in their own language, understand each other? The noisy bar made the task harder, but yes, they could indeed. And somehow that conversation lasted the subsequent 3 hours, interrupted only by some stylish dance moves. By 2 o’clock, the bar was closing, and they had to leave. She was forced towards the door by her friends but didn’t leave until having said goodbye. He clearly didn’t want to be obvious, so he reached out her waist and whispered, “it was nice meeting you.” A touch was all was that was needed for her body to shiver and a smile to appear. What was this feeling that she hadn’t felt in so long? On her way back to the hostel she reviewed all the self-enhancing photos she had posted in the last months. The descriptions once written in pain didn’t express it anymore. Actually, all of them seemed somehow happy and inspiring of a greater future. “How beautiful and worth it am I!”, she thought. No, their story didn’t end here and this trip changed her life. She set off with a broken heart and, in the end, I guess I can say she didn’t expect to find hope.
