The drums echoed in the rainforest as we arrived to Saposoa. The shipibovillage that was located in the forest and river of Ucayali. For several hours we have traveled to be able to meet the people who lives there. The purpose for this trip is to make our young shipibo group see and learn from this village. We passed the village with families watching our arrival. No walls covers the shipibo houses so they waved at us as we sang. A small girl looked at me when she ate her fruit in the house, curiously. In the water stood our camp, palms with coconuts hanging over it to give shades. One of the girls Liz jumps into the water after a sunny trip. It takes not a long time until someone is starting a radio with Cumbian music playing all around us. More of the youth joins Liz and have a volleyball game in the water. The adults prepare the dinner by the open fire in one of the houses all the kids relax, The water is so flooded that the place that once was a road in the village now is a pretty strong currents! Soon there is a game of how fast you could run to the beginning of the village and then just float thru it! The shipibo youths beats me on so many levels. They are a river people and always have learned to live with it. One of the guys are fishing with a fishing rope. Asking me if i like piranha for dinner. When the dinner is ready we all dry ourselves and sit together and eat, The elders tells us about how to create a community and how to together build a village. Later a workshop is held, so the youth gets to discuss how they would like their community to be in the future! I sit and watch as one of the youngest calls me. "Jess Look!" I bent over the groups map and see their sketches one store, one hospital and a bigger school is drawn on the paper. Then he points at a small squared box and I ask." What is it? " " It’s your house!" I was speechless and honored that they wanted me in their village. I just sat there with them an listened and thinking. Their community will have a bright future, when this kids are older. It takes big and crazy dreams to create something beautiful. After workshop we all go back into the water again. I swim a little bit longer this time. If I stop swimming small fishes will start to bite my legs. And then suddenly from no wear the little girl who ate fruit was in front of me. Talking in shipibo. I didn’t understand and when she got closer I saw that she had down syndrome. She was going under the water wanting me to play with her. I played along and then when I looked up her family was standing carefully watching over her. I smiled and waved and they did nod back. After swimming with here for a while she smiled and swam back to her family. I got back to our camp it was going to get dark. And suddenly Amadeus yelled Serpiente Jessica Serpiente! A big snake swam beside me,I almost peed myself! Standing still doing nothing I saw with relief how the snake swam away and I ran up on the house. They told me to be more careful and once again, I could feel the love from them. As stars arrived and the evening went dark we prepared our mosquito nets over the floor so we could sleep. I held my hand on the floor and picked up something under my pillow. Jess Is that dog shit. Liz wondered. I was so tired and wanted back to the water to wash my hand. Yes,,,,I guess it is...We all laughed and then went to bed. I looked out at the forest. It was talking so loud , birds, monkeys, insects all telling me to go to sleep. And after a long day like this I could relax, even after some dog shit under my pillow.
