Krabi, on Thailands west coast is characterized by the limestone cliffs of Railay Beach and the long stretches of white sands of Koh Lanta but they are no longer a secret with swaths of tourist visiting these picture perfect locations everyday. If you are looking for something different, a taste of Thailands past when cheap bungalows lined the beautiful beaches and their were no mega resorts in sight why not explore Krabi in a different way. Try the island of Koh Jum or locally known as Koh Pu located just 25 kilometers south of Krabi town. Its a sleepy island with only a few shops and not at a lot more - but what Koh Jum lacks in tourist life it fills with nature, unspoiled beaches and great value accomodations. Accessed only by boat, Koh Jum is not for everyone, it takes a little bit longer, its not as accessible as its rival islands but a quick car from Krabi airport will bring you to paradise with relative ease. The small access pier is where small boats pre-arranged by your resort will be waiting for you with friendly smiles and help for your bags, try to pack light as your still going to have to load your bags on the boat. The island is beautiful, filled with coconut palms and hidden beaches, the people are friendly and the value for dollar is excellent with lots of quite bungalows available directly on the beach or for value travelers, just a few feet away even better deals can be had. Most of the hotels on Koh Jum are concentrated on the western side of the island facing Phi Phi and Phuket, both of which are accessible by speed boat or thai long tail - just check the weather forecast in advance as its about an hour ride across the open sea to get there. When you arrive in Phi Phi you will immediately know why you choose Koh Jum, traffic, travelers and shopping are everywhere, but peace and quiet is not. You'll find yourself staring back at Koh Jum and longing for the mellow sounds of the island. If long boat rides are not your thing, rent a scooter and explore the island, its small enough to be manageable in a day and big enough to find some great hidden spots. Koh Jum makes a great, low key holiday and is perfect for couples, families and friends looking to get away from the busier islands in Krabi province. How to get there - The nearest airport to Koh Jum is Krabi International Airport and there are daily flights by Thai airways and lots of budget carriers. Plan your arrival well because boats don't cross to Koh Jum at night, therefor if you arrive at night you'll have to spend the night in Krabi town - not all bad, Krabi has a great night market and excellent food as well. Ferries to Koh Jum depart from Krabi's Klong Jilad Pier several times per day, once you arrive at Krabi Airport you can take a taxi or bus to their pier - tickets are available at the pier. Where to Stay - HIGH END - there are two resorts for luxury on Koh Jum, they both provide private transfers (request when booking) and will pick you up at their private pier KOH JUM LODGE provides rustic luxury bungalows, directly on the beach with a pool and great restaurant serving international cuisine, they have foreign management and cater to European travelers KOH JUM BEACH VILLAS has 1 - 4 room villas right on the beach, some with private pools and all with amazing views of the stunning beach, they have a restaurant, pool and bar as well as beautifully manicured gardens, breakfast is generally included and recommended. BUDGET / MID RANGE GOLDEN PEARL RESORT - has beachfront and jungle bungalows, clean and simple with a great restaurant, excellent value for dollar and the islands latest bar - if the bartender made it to work its the place to be SEASON BUNGALOW - has A frame style concrete bungalows on the beach, with air conditioning and beach chairs. The rooms are clean and simple, the resort mellow and its located right between Golden Pearl and Koh Jum Lodge.
