In the year 2004, a 6 year old me got the chance to London for as my first ever international trip. As an African youngling gaining this opportunity, one could imagine my excitement. I remember I barely slept the entire two days prior to our departure. Finally on the 17th of October, I arrived at the Heathrow airport via British airways. We then moved on to my aunt's flat close to a very expected wonder if the world "London Bridge". Although I had seen from some films on how the European environment looked like, nothing could prepare me for the trills an drills of London. I got introduced to the world of"baby dolls" by my cousin Allison. She had this thick big glasses and British accent that I admired. We would cause a fuss at the malls or shops whenever our moms asked that we should leave the "toys and dolls" section and move on. Allison being the more smart one with technology would go on the computer and let us continue our "window shopping" on websites. My favorite doll was the "Baby Annabelle doll". And then one day while watching some kids playing in the backyard of the apartment building, my mom and aunty returned from the market. My aunt then said it's finally time to fall in love with London. And by this, she meant the food she was about to prepare. With eyes full of anticipation I couldn't keep away from the kitchen door. I was so excited to taste "London". After some minutes, a plate was put before me and then young me just took the fork and took a bite. "Oh dear! Immediately I took a bite of the meat on the plate, I scrunched up my face and then said" what is that? I don't want it! ". My meal was Potato chips with baked beans and sausage. My aunt and dad tried to pacify my wining but I just wouldn't budge so they just let me be. But what was very funny was that though I had rejected the meal, I actually wanted to eat the potato chips and baked beans without the sausage but I was just scared that I will be rebuked. And then stayed at my aunt's place for about a month and half. One day, my cousin wouldn't stop talking about this musical, so decided to watch. When the day finally came, we were seated on the floor with our eyes glued to the TV, lost in the world of "John Travolta and Olivia Newtown-John's Grease". I remember feeling the need to pee but didn't. And by the end of the movie, I had fallen in love with dance moves of "Danny Zuko" and there was no going back. Some days after, I was invited by my dad's pal to come over to Ashford, Kent. I went to the sub station and for the first time, took a train and the underground train to be specific. I had previously been using the bus or Tram.It was my first time and whiles in the train, all I wish the train won't be dark due to the underground railroad we were taking. I finally made it to Ashford Kent and amazingly, was offered the same meal I had offered as dinner. I prayed so much that my dad would go away since he experienced my prior rejection of the meal. I started taking bites and practising my cutlery skills and immediately my dad announced he's going to take a shower, it was like I was possessed, I ate the meal, got three more sausages to add. This became the start of the end of a "Sausage lovelorn relationship". I was then enrolled into elementary school "grade four" since I was staying in London for six months and had the best time getting to uncover the unknown. I went to London and discovered things that were just a mystery. But it became a land of not just my firsts but best. Potato chips with baked beans and sausage(s) till today has been my favorite dish of all. And Grease remains the inspiration for my passion for singing and dancing.
