Last minute ticket to Edinburgh

A leap into the unknown United Kingdom

I love concerts so I was gutted to find out one of my favorite bands 'Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes' was playing in my hometown Bristol when I was away. Assuming it to be a lost cause I forgot about it and planned for my trip to Morocco but a few hours before I got on the plane I quickly look at other tour dates. There was a gig in Edinburgh still available. But surely Edinburgh is too far to go just for a gig right? Well on the same day Frank posted on his Instagram how small the UK is and if you had missed out on getting tickets for your city you could consider travelling and making a trip out of it. Feeling inspired I looked at travel options. Trains were shockingly expensive but flights were super cheap provided I stayed for a few days. So at the last moment I bought a concert ticket, flight tickets and a hostel for 6 days. It cost me just over £100 and considering I got to see one of my favorite cities Edinburgh as well as an intimate gig I could not be more happy. A few weeks later I found myself walking along the Royal Mile with a massive smile on my face. I've only got hand luggage on me, I'm sleeping in a cheap dorm and I'm on a very tight budget but despite it being February Scotland is actually quite warm! I have brought my laptop as I have a lot of editing to do but I am getting through it fast. Being in a different city seems to have motivated me and I'm not getting distracted for once. I've decided to edit an interview then explore the city before finding another coffee shop and editing once again. This system keeps me active as well as excited. I return back to the hostel in the evening to find out there is a pub crawl on. I don't drink much particularly compared to the Scots but it would be nice to meet some people so I decided to go along. It turns out to be quite a funny experience. At first everyone assumes I'm an Aussie due to my long hair. I take this as a compliment as I'm not the proudest Brit. People also think I surf or at least I must play the guitar. I wish I knew both of these things but sadly I can't do either. The night ends with Karaoke. I'm not normally a fan but a few pints have warmed me to it and while it's not exactly as in tune it's a nice warm up for the gig tomorrow. I wake up a tad late due to the booze and edit a little in the hostel instead of going to cafés to save some money. I can't however resist the fudge shop opposite the hostel. After watching them make a mix of chocolate and caramel fudge I have to buy a block. The night can't come quickly enough. I head to the venue early to catch the support band Black Futures. Having never seen them before they successfully hold mine and the crowds attention with their impressive stage show. It features some dancers dressed in radiation suits running around in the audience so staying still is not an option. Then it is time for the headliner. Their new single Crowbar starts the show off. Frank runs on stage and shouts "Edinburgh, how you feeling tonight?" like everyone else around me I scream and the madness begins. Everyone is jumping, I'm dripping in sweat, it's impossible to stay still and I have never smiled so much in my life. Halfway through the show a calm song is finally played. It's off their new album called Anxiety and it's yet to be released. Frank starts with a monologue talking about the importance of being open with mental health and suddenly I start feeling emotional. The song anxiety is truly beautiful and hard hitting. I feel myself struggling to hold in some tears but I am so glad I am here. I got this amazing experience all due to a split second decision.
