A leap into the unknown Sri Lanka

Cocktails, sarongs and and resorts! Sounds nice doesn't it. Urgahhh well it wasn't really for us when we were choosing our honeymoon. Rose petals and towels wrapped as swans perched on the end of our bed didn't really appeal to us. I typed top places to travel on your honeymoon in google and those were the places we choose not to adventure to! An all inclusive resort honeymoon package just didn't scream romantic to us . But I have NO doubt Sri Lanka will soon be popping up on everyone's google searches soon. WHAT a place! Imagine staying in a completely open authentic tree house in the middle of the jungle. Hearing monkeys swinging from tree to tree around you as your nestled in bed with your lover hoping today wasn't the day monkeys stole your charger or dozing off to the soft light of the stars above you and locals setting of fire crackers to deter wild elephants in nearby villages. Waking to the local monks chanting in the near by monasteries and watching wildlife as you sip on a hot cuppa of Sri Lankan tea while getting ready to venture out to Sigirya rock one of the great wonders of the world, take a boat ride of a lake filled with lotus flowers or perhaps hanging out of a local train as you cross fields of tea plantations watching local women plucking tea NOW that is romantic. Returning to your private campsite from a full day on safari where you saw an array of wild animals like baby elephants and crocs sun baking on the river banks indulging in 6 course private dinning experience in the middle of the jungle, bombfire roaring next to you as you sip on a Lion Sri Lankan beer later stumping back to your glamping tent trying to following the path through the jungle that was lite up with citronella candles then to wake in the middle of the night to your lover whispered there is elephants outside out tent. Your husband supporting you as you balance yourself on the toilet trying to catch a glimpse of the elephants ripping up grass meters away from you sounds magical doesn't it? or Quad biking with your new husband (trying not to die) through tea plantations and chasing waterfalls I mean come on all in the name of love right! Sri Lanka really had it all. Unique accommodation from bunglows hanging over beaches on the coastline of Mirrissa at $18 dollars a night, crashing waves smashing the rocks beneath you. 5 star hotels at $500+ a night which were covered in jungle, balconies barley recognizable due to the dense bush that hung over the walls of the 5 star hotel you almost felt like you were on the set of Jurassic park with marble floors. Experiences that would suit anyone young or old! Female or male! families, couples, backpackers, singles or honeymooners alike. Local cooking classes, yoga for street dogs on a rooftop of a hipster cafe, hikes, train rides, wildlife and tea plantations the list really goes on. Romance is what you make it! following trends and social media hashtag spots are fun I guess! but what really fills your heart! what fills your cup? what makes your blood pump? I know for me and my husband doing something that really spoke true to us as individuals and as a couple was important! stepping out of our comfort zone and trying things that the other person truly loved and giving it your all will forever be the most romantic gesture. Sri Lanka is busting with culture, spirituality, wildlife and FOOD! Sri Lanka will have a special place in my heart!
