My wife was almost in tears and I was running out of ideas. So,here we are, a young couple lost in the dark alleys of a foreign country, whose language we didn't understand and with only a few thousand dongs in our pockets. Let me rewind 6hours back, when these two lovebirds were brimming with excitement as they mounted on the free shuttle bus of the resort for the famous fish market of Pho Qouc island. As we alighted to explore the market,we were reminded by a rather grumpy driver to be present at the stop at 8:00pm for the last return bus to the resort. We paid little heed to him,and rushed to taste the various Vietnamese delicacies( and in the process wasting our Dong)! As night descended, the place became magical with the dark waters of the creek, the aroma of seafood and the cacophony of the hawkers and the tourists. After 2hours,with our tired legs revolting and our.stomachs filled to the brim,we decided it's time to return.....and that's when fate struck the fatal blow. We were lost. All roads exiting from the market seemed same to my eyes. I frantically ran from one end to other end of the market ,only to become more confused. We were like two little flies caught in a giant spider's lair. I found a group of Amercans, but they could not help much. I am an atheist, but I hoped some miracle may save us this time. My wife was in tears,I dejected devastated confused, when two magic words reached my ears-"bus","Vinpearl"(the name our resort). A short Vietnamese man,was waving at us,and asked again "Vinpearl". The words sounded like music to my ears, filling my heart with joy that surpassed the moment when my wife proposed to me! We hurried across to him, frantically nodding our heads (to convey our assent, gratitude and everything in between). It turned out that they (the person who called us and his family of 4) were on a vacation to the same resort as ours, and they had noticed us running hither tither like a headless chicken. The next hour was spent in broken English and Vietnamese, but language hardly made an obstacle in our communication. They offered us a local Vietnamese drink, which we sceptically accepted, and when we offered to pay told us - " You...Guests, we. .hosts". Such hospitality touched us,as I reflected that the saying " Atithi devo bhaba"( The guest is my God) and " Vasundhara Kutumbakam"(the world is my family) is true not only in my country (India),but also in this small island,a land so different from our culture and heritage, but whose people are so close to my heart.
