I was living and working in South Africa at that time, early 2016. An African colleague who knows my passion for traveling suggested we go to Lesotho for the weekend, a country i never knew it existed until i moved to SA. I didn’t hesitate to say no, adding a new country to my count is a passion, and this one was unique. Never heard that anyone i know has done before. I checked with my passport, and since I’m Jordanian I literally need a visa to enter the toilet! Jokes aside the visa story was the funniest, the so called “Embassy of Lesotho” was in a half burnt building in downtown Johannesburg! I submitted my papers “which were missing” but the lady asked me to share anything i missed on email - very smoothly- 2 days later i called to check and apparently i got the visa but she forgot to call :) The road trip started on a Friday after work, from Joburg the road should take 4-5 hours, however it took us not less than 6. The traffic was crazy, we assumed it’s the weekend and everyone is going home yet we realized later what was the reason. On our way we passed through interesting areas such as -Bethlehem, Senekal, frankfort it was like traveling a fake world in less than a day. Right when we reached the borders, we submitted our passports, and apparently as a Jordanian citizen my passport was unique, where all the employees at passport control came to see the Alien arriving from the Middle East 😂 through land! Finally we arrived Maseru after midnight where we stayed at my colleague’s friend’s house The next morning we went for a walk to explore “the village”, there was no description better than this, it was just a green place with kids running around (Naked) and houses made of zync or poor architecture. Time for lunch, we headed to town and there was no posh place. Everything looks exactly the same, poverty, kids in the street, small kiosks along the way and then Vodacom with more than 70% market share (i was working with them at the time). It was a Vodacom territory! In the afternoon our colleague’s friend took us to a party sponsored by Vodacom, which we realized why the traffic was crazy during the weekend, it was THE party in lesotho, Ofcourse as Vodacome employees we got the premium tickets and got to the VIP lounge, we had access to where some important people, little did we know that we will meet the King soon ;), we were afraid to approach although we were sitting 3 steps away! I’m brave to just say Hi, and i always used the benefit of “looking” different, i went to shake hands with the King and Queen when they asked me where i am from and i said Jordan, here comes the surprise when the Queen said - oh how much i wish to see Queen Rania!- i just smiled and said me too, one day. The party went on, we were tired from driving last night and we were going to drive back the day after. So once we reached home after midnight, we packed and decided to wake up early to go explore the place. The next morning we drove around the country, which didn’t take more than 3 hours, same scenery everywhere just a little more greneey here and there, we went to local markets on the road to get our souvenirs and then off to Johannesburg! It was daylight on the way back so we stopped at 2 or 3 restaurants on the way, which exceeded our expectations! After all it was a weird, fun and a new adventure for the weekend that i will never forget :)
