There's a saying about nothing magic happening in your comfort zone — that if you want to have a truly remarkable experience, you need to feel uncomfortable, place yourself in uncomfortable situations. And even though part of me agrees with that, I believe even more in being against generalisations, whichever type they may be. Alentejo is well known for the food, the sceneries, the people. It's a place to rest, to recharge, to rethink — or to stop thinking altogether. And, whichever the city or village you pick, it's a land to enjoy yourself and your surroundings, and feel at home. Time goes by slowly, especially in the summer. Wherever you go, there's only a handful of places at your disposal. If you spend a week in one city, you'll probably end up having multiple meals at the same spot, and at your second visit the owner, that already served you in the first time, will probably know what to recommend specifically to you, given what you already tasted and how that made you feel. You'll probably end up having a glass of wine with him, unpretentiously, while talking about nothing and everything, and after that first glass will come the second bottle, and after that a third shared meal. Time goes by specially fast, as the saying goes, because you're merely existing in a wonderful existence, so wonderful and so familiar you never thought it would possible in a new place that feels like you've known for such a long time. Upon your departure, you'll feel like you're leaving a city that's not a city — that's a friend's, or maybe your grandparents, home. Because people treated you so selflessly, so kindly, so wholeheartedly, you'll feel like coming back, even though you always believed the world is so big you shouldn't go the same place twice. And precisely because the world is indeed so big, and there's so much more out there for you to see, you'll end up coming back — whenever you need to regain your trust in human beings, whenever you need to reconnect to what's dearest to you, whenever you need a clear head and a warm heart, you'll end up in a place so small it feels the whole world to you. Called Alentejo.
