Ive travelled my whole life. Be it for business or pleasure, magic always seemed abroad so that was where I headed every opportunity I could. Filling three passports and finding the need to brag about the wonderful cultures, experiences, history and its people which I could not (my ignorant opinion) find in South Africa. Life happens while you are making plans and with travel and work scaled down, I moved to Cape Town and made a decision to explore this beautiful city and its surrounds with as much vigour and enthusiasm as I had for my travel abroad. What a magical decision it was. With no car, my only transport was MyCity bus service, a 10 seater taxi, lots of walking or an Uber. I started discovering the magic that was Cape Town and its people, my people, and fell in love with the unbelievable gem. The magic wasn't only Table Mountain, the waterfront or the wine farms. I discovered coffee shops in old car dealerships, a craft beer brewery in a suburb, a wine farm with a view of the ocean, freshly caught seafood made at a local harbour restaurant, an odd looking tree thats origin is Madagascar. I cycled at a Power Station with unbelievable views of Table Mountain, secluded beaches and magical fauna and flora while Zebras and Springbok grazed a couple of feet away from me. I cruised on a yacht on a summers evening with strangers who became my friends. I hiked and cycled every single weekend at a different spot each time, promising myself that I would return to my favourite spots once there was nothing left to see. That was 2 years ago and Im still discovering. I did an art class in a big empty warehouse, even though my attempt at art was similar to that of a small child. I mingled with arty, rockstars at an old record store with jazz playing in the background. I took a bag of peanuts to a local park and became a statue for a goose, 20 squirrels and some arrogant pigeons. There are food markets, nights markets, vintage markets, pop up markets and festivals. You can join a group for a hike, go for a swim at a tidal pool, lie on a beach. The ocean is pretty chilly an various pools make up for that discomfort. Visit Seal island or dive with the seals, paddle or kayak. The options are endless. The people in Cape Town are magical, kind and helpful. I found that starting a conversation with someone was met with enthusiasm to guide and to help. True African spirit. Information and guidance was always at hand with the do's and dont's of safety. I do feel that travelling alone as a local has opened up a whole new world of interesting conversation and discovery. I connected with people of all backgrounds, from different countries in my home country, South Africa. A bucket list destination by far!
