It was January 2018 when I first discovered the joy of camping out, in the most beautiful middle of nowhere I've ever seen. Granted, I was still very new at traveling and backpacking, but it was truly an experience of a lifetime. Somewhere in the interstate road of Balikpapan-Samarinda, there's a mountain where some people describe holding such a breathtaking view. Me and my friends heard the buzz in one sunny Saturday afternoon, we packed our bags and head out, spontaneously. Camping is not something I usually do so it was a whole new experience for me, but the joy I experienced there is something I would never forget. The road to this rocky mountain is harsh and unforgiving for us who were on motorcycles. It was raining the morning before and the muddy road had been very slippery. Once we reached the bottom of this rocky mountain, we parked our motorcycles and continue our journey on foot to hike the mountain because the path became too steep. The forest that surround us was completely untouched. The primal sound of birds and monkeys accompanied us lovingly the whole journey. I was entering a whole new world. We spent 4 hours in the interstate road, then 1 in the muddy road with motorcycles, and another hour more for hiking the rocky mountain. We were spent and hungry but the view we got at the peak was enough to drive away our fatigue. It was mesmerizing with the sea of forests stretched far into the horizon under the open sky. We reached the top just in time before sunset and after setting up our camps, we sat together and enjoyed the glorious sunset in the west, disappearing into the forest and bringing all its color with it. However, the view at night is even more beautiful. Being far from light and gas pollution, the sky above us back then was glittered with stars. I spent so much time observing the heavenly constellations, something I'd never get to do back home and in the city. Around the bonfire, we sang and told stories, and we bonded like we never did before. It was worth the challenging journey, and I am glad I get to did it with my best friend Joseph. That day was our most cherished memories together. We woke up at the break of dawn because we wanted to see the sunrise here too. The peak was naturally structured like a wall, so we got to stroll along the rocky path in the peak, into the east. The fresh smell of dew and cold misty air of the mountain was all around us back then. We climbed the tallest rocks and revel in the magnificence of the sun rising from the sea of greens. We took lots of photos and had a lot of fun that day. It was a journey worth remembering and I was so glad this mountain was still so preserved in its natural state, pristine from human's altercation expect a few name engravings on the rocks to mark someone was here. We did not do that, however. The photos and memories were enough of a proof for it. We packed our camps and trash and set to get back to our motorcycles in the afternoon. The way back home was uneventful but we promised to camp again here someday and explore more cool destinations like that mountain. And we did, and I began to love camping and traveling. This mountain is not only giving me such fond memories, but it also ignites my passion for exploration and adventure. The memories of this misty, rocky mountain is one of my most treasured thing, and I hope I get to experience this feeling for many more.
