It was a beautiful spring morning when I received a call from my husband that he is getting flight tickets to Guwahati (Assam ) at a very good rate and he is going ahead with the booking so that we can visit the Kamakhya temple....a temple which I intended to visit from long. Immediately I started my ground work of exploring places to visit around. And I came to know about Majuli island. Majuli island is the world largest river island and is expected to vanish from the world map very soon with increasing global warming. So , I made it a point to visit Majuli island with my kids before it gets disappeared. After paying visit to Kamakhya temple, we started our journey to jorahat enroute visiting kaziranga national park. By the time we reached Jorahat it was late evening and therefore we checked into a hotel to spend our night. Body was at rest but my mind was dreaming about Majuli....how will be a river island be....will it be similar to island I had seen in anasagar lake , Ajmer....or it will be just a barren land with few Restaurants??? But, I will get answers to all my questions only after reaching Majuli island. The next day ,after breakfast ,we moved to the jetty....and boarded the steamer. Steamer...was very different from what I had expected.....nothing luxurious....and all class of people travelling in the same compartment. It was too crowded and the weather was hot and humid. But ,the exciting to reach Majuli island outshined all ......It was a long trip from jetty to Majuli island....By the time we reached Majuli island it was afternoon. But we were astonished...to see that this river island had all sorts of facilities ....from school to petrol pump...to gas agency...to garment shop ...to restaurants Nd hotels .Each and every day to day essential item was available in this river island. We hired a cab to visit the island and the temples on it. We also visited the bamboo houses made on stilts from inside. The visit to mask making school was a life time experience. The used natural resources to make masks and then performed dramas on mythological stories. The food available was tasty and had essence of Assamese flavours in it. Kids were happy to find their favourite kurkure and cold drinks on this river island. People of this island were very congenial and dressing was not much different from us. Once you enter the island, you won't even come to know that you are amidst the vast Brahmaputra river. The people here do agriculture too.The scenic beauty of this island is mesmerising. The people are simple and atheist. Lord Krishna is the main deity of the people here. We clicked many photographs on this geographical wonder which is on the verge of extinction for our memories. Then...it was time to bid adieu to this beautiful river island as the sun was about to set .The last ferry to jorahat was about to leave. so we rushed to the jetty .The steamer was again no less crowded than in morning. But we managed to secure a place to sit. With heavy heart and beautiful memories to be cherished we bid goodbye to this beautiful river island. In a nut shell, " Majuli may mazaa aa Gaya " (had a great time in Majuli ) This trip to mesmerising Majuli island was not only beautiful but informative too. It was much more than expected on a river island. Before this island vanishes in the lap of nature ,my advice to all is do take out time and visit this river island. I assure you will thank me for suggesting you for this Mind-blowing place.
