My goal was to deliver my husbands ashes into Salinas, CA from Albuquerque, Nm. Train Ride was uneventful. Paranoid and miserable my sleep was sporadic. The view was dismal. The switchover in Los Angeles was packed and there us no idea where to go. Be prepared to ask and have physical direction lead. If that's not your style twenty minutes I believe pops up on screen then you really have to hustle. Upon arrival at Salinas it was dark out. Took a bus (cleaner and quieter compared to my city). Do not expect to get on with short change or expect generosity of others. From Monterey it was 6.5 mile walk to Lone Cypress Tree. On google map the shortest walk was two hours, sixteen minutes. Arriving at Viejo Road was dark even my flashlight was not bright enough, used light off cellphone. There was a highway below and thin forest between. On other side dense trees. Was okay until the road curved making highway invisible and darker. Well I scrambled over fence to walk thin shoulder of a highway. Was willing to deal with traffic then some creature going for me. Finally arrived at guard station saying no entrance until 6 a.m. Gave me water thankfully. Was forced to walk into Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA. Hotels and shops everywhere priced above one hundred dollars. My low budget kept me outside sitting on benches, jumping at each sound. Moving when cops drove by or pretending to focus on phone. Was at bar and lady there gabe advice restrooms and tents were at the each. Walked that direction. Was darker compared to city and when something big and white four feet in front me jumped up and hearing the big thud on road made me run back into the city. Sat down and everytime heard a pebble bounce then nothing. Kept walking more in. Mind you most hotel lobbies were closed. My last stop was a small relief. Was Pine Inn, tried the door was open. Looked like scene from Count Dracula. All red, three sections each had fake ongoing fireplaces. Sat on sofa for two hours charging my phone and enjoying the heat. Around two in morning noticed innkeeper. Tried to ask to sleep on sofa but was refused. Finally decides to walk guard station and sat there several hours until six. Guy was nice he gave me some fruit and water. Stupidly I asked what creatures were around. Mountain Lions. Seeing my fear he tried to say they approach station but run off when you walk toward them. Uh huh. Stuck to road all the way to Lone Cypress. Was dark also until seven or eight in morning. Thankfully nothing was seen just shadows and trees rustling. In daylight pebble beach is more rural with trees than my assumption of a forest at dark. Could not place ashes by tree (tree of mourning). Was a deck and fence. Ended up placing some over deck wishing the wind to whisk it to tree. Walk back was super hot and I tried to call Uber and had no cell reception. No rides were offered but one driver tried to give a bottle of water. Politely refused. Was walking a longer route and ran into another guard station and got water. Went back to Salinas to my hotel. Feet were hurting, sunburned and no sleep. Crashed for hours. Side notes, The City of Los Angeles and Salinas is filthy. Have plenty of water and some fuel to keep you going. Don't expect well lite streets and for cheaper rates use a website. Mine was booking.com. There are extra taxes and fees for California even Housekeeping. My place Motel 6 vibrated from train but was quiet. It was not clean, hair etc. I cleaned before sleeping. Make sure you are nearby stores. Next day walked a total of five miles to buy groceries. Have fun! Writing is really not my thing and neither is travelling. At this time in life just trying something new and totally different.
