I have been to Trinidad Carnival for 3 years in a row but I had never been to Tobago, the sister island. So without a plan or housing, I decided I would take the first standby flight to Tobago the day after Ash Wednesday 6am. Now everyone that goes to carnival in TNT knows that flying into Tobago after carnival is packed but this was a mini adventure for me. I wanted to see if I could explore the island for 1 day for less than $100 usd. I landed at the airport, made friends with the locals, walked to the beach (10 minutes away),and went for a swim in the ocean. Then I found out where the party was that night and promoted it to every person I met during the day. Then I went on the glass bottom boat tour to the Nylon Lagoon and Pigeon Point. We met up with other boats and the participant danced in the hip high water in the turquoise clear water. Then we went snorkeling and shell collecting too. When we returned to the dock, me and my new friends went to get “doubles” and “roti” (traditional TNT food. We washed it down with a Stag beer and explored the shops near by the beach. As I met more people I invited them to the club later that evening. As the day came to an end and I didn’t have a room or car, I washed up at the clubs bathroom and changed my outfit. Tired but ready to party I found a spot in VIP and took a cat nap. I gave the attendant $20 to watch my book bag. When I awoke I found that the party was getting thick so I danced the night away with 4 of my new friends. I met people from all over the world. We traded stories and advice.i told them about my annual Kenya Safari / Mombasa beach trip in August and the other adventures I have had traveling to every continent. When the night was over one of them drove me to the airport 8 minutes away. I grabbed the 6am flight back to Port of Spain. This trip taught me that you can find fun if you aren’t fearful. The island was safe beautiful and inspiring. I would definitely recommend honeymooners and beach lovers check out Tobago. So peaceful and beautiful.
