This is a story of my visit to Sihanoukville in Cambodia as a solo traveller. My resort was in Koh Rong island which was basically a countryside island and I stayed in a resort with many positive reviews and that my friend had recommended. The island was beautiful and serine, a break from the hustle and bustle of life in the city. The resort itself had so many fun activities that included snorkelling, a ‘night with Plankton’, full moon party and volleyball. I had heard the area was a good spot to do Kayaking and as if never done this before I was keen to give it a go. I asked the resort if anyone could organise a kayaking trip, but they were unable to offer this service as they had no equipment. I went out for dinner one evening and met a couple, as the night went on I told them of my desire to do some kayaking and asked them for any recommendations - the husband who happened to work at the resort I was staying in said he would take me after his shift the following day, I didn't expect he was serious as he’d had a few drinks before making his pledge, however I was hopeful. The following day I went for a drink at the resort bar and I saw the guy from the night before, he waved me over and told me his shift will end at 3 in the noon and he would meet me here to take me kayaking. I couldn’t believe he was serious, I was so excited! At 3 I met him at the spot and we went in his jeep to a river which connects to the sea. While Kayaking, he told me about himself and his wife, and we shared stories of our lives and different cultures. He told me his village in Siem Reap and also how he met his wife. He told me how he’d learnt English and how he was great full that he did as he was able to converse with the many English speaking tourists who visited the resort. We really became good friends by the end of my trip. We exchanged numbers after finishing up the Kayaking and he asked me about what plans I had for the evening. I told him that I am going to see Plankton at night so he asked if he and his wife could join me, as she’d never seen it before. I was happy because he was the one who can communicate in both English and Cambodian language and knew he could help me communicate with the staff. We had a nice evening and I really enjoyed the show, they asked me both to dinner the following evening as it was my final night in the resort and wanted to treat me. That night we had a few drinks and dinner, but I called it an early night as my flight was quite early the next morning. The couple offered to take me to the airport which I declined as it was too early and they’d already done so much for me. We still keep in contact and they have even made plans to visit me at the end of the year.
