Spending your weekend in a fun and affordable place at the heart of Jakarta. I was reminded of Kota Tua at that time. Its location was easily approached using public transportation and its not very difficult at all. Traveling there from where I am was only 1.5 hour ride. On weekend, Kota Tua is a very crowded place, because of its location which is at the center of Jakarta, Kota Tua becomes a prime recreation spot for weekenders. I went there carrying my backpack, wearing my Keds and with a bottle of water, lets not forget my sunglasses to protect my eyes from the bright sunny day. And if ever i got hungry, there's no need for concern cause Kota Tua is full of food vendors. In the morning the situation was less crowded, there are some who just sits around and chat, some are busy documenting around Kota Tua and there are others that strolls around and enjoying the moment. In the old days, kota tua was the headquarters for the Dutch East India Company. this company was established in kota tua or used to be known as Old Batavia. That is why you will find lots of houses and offices with a colonial style esthetics. Few examples are the Fatahillah Museum, Bank Indonesia Museum, Wayang Museum and some of the restaurants that are located in the area. Few interesting things that caught my attention is when I found lots of old bicycle that can be rented. These are old bicycle that have a higher proportion and esthetic look that can be found in the old Dutch Colonial Era. Imagine the feel of riding around Kota Tua using these Old Bicycle will be an exciting experience by it self. "how much to rent these bicycle sir", "Rp 75.000 for 1.5 hour ride and Rp 100.000 for a 2 hour ride" said the bicycle vendor, how wonderful... for 1.5 hour i can explore every corner of Kota Tua that I've never seen before. " ok... i'll take the 1st option sir". the option that I took will take around Kota Tua through Sunda Kelapa Port, Bahari Museum, Syahbandar Tower, Kota Intan Bridge and The Red Shop. And if I choose the 2nd and 3rd option, the length of the ride will be much further with a 2 hour time limit. Each option we choose will be accompanied by a tour guide and also we will get to wear a colored hat which come include with either option we choose. These Old Bicycle Rental services have been around since 2008 and have become a part of Kota Tua. I was very hungry after finishing my bicycle ride and can't wait to taste the culinary around Kota Tua. Yes I've found an egg crust vendor, these days its very hard to find these egg crust vendor and I'm lucky enough to find it here. According to history, these egg crust delicacies have been around since the Dutch Colonial Era. it was created by the Betawi People from combining Sticky Rice and Eggs, buyers can choose between chicken eggs or duck eggs, it will then be added some spices. The vendors will then cook the egg crust half done, then they will turn the pan around so that the eggs will come in to contact with the fire directly. once done, the egg crust will then be serve with fried shallots. Usually, egg crust vendors are often around when its time for the city of Jakarta's anniversary, but at Kota Tua, you will see them every weekend. I've talked to one of them during my travel at Kota Tua, he said that lots of international and local tourist searches for this traditional delicacies due to its unique flavour that makes lots of people want to try them. After experiencing touring Kota Tua on a bicycle and tasting one of its delicacies which is Jakarta style egg crust, I felt like Kota Tua is one of the places that i will definitely come to visit again, there are still lots of interesting places to see here. The city of Jakarta is always full of culture and in some part of the city holds lots of stories from the past era. We can learn from its history, historical buildings and even its culinary. looking at all this marvels makes time flies by so fast, suddenly its was already noon and the sun is scorching hot, I think that my adventures is enough for today. but before going back home, I've manage to capture a couple of picture such as old building, children playing, the balloon vendor and the old bicycle that I've used. Today I have a great story about the historical and delicacies about Kota Tua that will always be in my memories and will tell about them to whomever willing to listen. " see you next time sir" saying good bye to the egg crust vendor and the old bicycle rental. the smiled while waving their hand, "be careful on your way home" they said, which makes me smile while waving back at them.
