So far, there is very little information about this place, and it is completely absent in sources in any language. While it can be called unique and not oversaturated by tourists. Now the FAI organization, which is engaged in the exploration of salt lakes, conti century and the oldest salt factory in Sardinia. It all began in 1919 with malaria, or rather it will be said from the moment when engineer Luigi Conti-Vecchi presented the project for an reclamation of Santa Gilla pond. How is malaria related to land reclamation or land drainage in another way? Malaria mosquitoes live in swampy areas. It is they who throughout history have been the cause of death of a huge number of Sardinians. Death did not choose by gender and age. Everyone was dying, from children to the elderly. The account was kept for hundreds and thousands of people a year. The engineer’s project involved not just mindless drainage of the land, but also the construction of a salt plant. An ambitious project would solve several issues at once: the catastrophic situation with malaria, the expansion of the city and the creation of new jobs, as well as it would restore the Sardinians historical salt mining. It has been mined on the island since ancient times. In 1927, the first crop of 70,000 tons was harvested at the plant, which then quickly grew to 240,000 tons. It is difficult to believe, but all this salt was collected almost by hand, and carried on the backs of workers. Such mechanization, which we see now, happened much later. In the meantime, production has become city-forming. The so-called "salt village" appeared. People lived here, created families, gave birth to children, spent holidays, people dreamed and died, living a fairly happy life, as historical chronicles show. The production had different periods of ups and downs, as a result, the "salt village" no longer exists, and the plant is owned by the environmental company Eni-Sybdial. In 2015, together with the FAI, it launched another ambitious project to restore the history of the area. And only in 2017, the plant and lakes on its territory are open for viewing. Only 3 years to the current time! So you have a chance not only to learn about the history of the region, but also to bring unique shots. From the entrance begins a journey through the lands that were created by man in collaboration with nature: sea, sun and wind. And there are also people who are not from the genus of homosapiens: free and graceful flamingos! Knowing such an incredible passion of those who came to them, guides often stop the train if they come close to the shore, what happens, because the birds have long been accustomed to a strange mechanical object. At the same time, flamingos are very cautious. Even before the trip, we wondered why more often amateur pictures show birds in the distance, there are almost no "portrait" photographs. That's because the birds feel the person for another 100-150 meters, or even 200 meters, and prefer to never shorten this distance, moving away smoothly and leisurely. Why did the birds choose the plant - it would seem a completely inappropriate place for them. Do not forget that the territory of the plant is estuaries - reservoirs of water of different salinity. Where salt concentration is not so high, new tenants appear - tiny Artemia crustaceans. They contain carotenoids, which color the feathers of birds in pink. By the way, it is carotenoids that make, for example, carrots orange. Not all flamingos are pink or red, some are off-white. This occurs when crustaceans that contain a carotenoid do not predominate in food. By the way, the people came up with the name of the birds thanks to the crustaceans, which paint the birds in pink and fiery colors. After all, “flamma” - is translated from Latin as “fire”. The fire that kindles in people's hearts incredible curiosity and delight. *** Salt is called differently, often "white death", referring to the harm of excessive consumption of this complex substance. But for this region, for people and animals, salt is “white life” or “white gold”.
