Sayulita Dreaming

Armed with crystals, candles & incense, the lucky seven made it to a hilltop house in Sayulita, Mexico, an uplifting town that welcomed us with signs that read “La fabrica de los sueños (The fabric of dreams)” and “mas amor (more love).” We were there to celebrate my friend’s birthday. The lucky seven consisted of artists, photographers, a spiritual healer and long time friends. The sun had set. Fireworks and loud music filled the landscape and welcomed us that night. We took a windy staircase down to the street and walked down a long, steep hill. From there, it was a quick walk on the cobblestone streets to the beach. After our toes hit the sand we found our way to a mezcal bar. A toast to our arrival and what was to come. The next day we walked through the town to the beach. Painted with the sun, the town was warm and inviting. We enjoyed the warm weather and a view of the calm waters under umbrellas. It was picture perfect. We planned on having a spiritual healing session that night to coincide with the new moon. A time of change. A time to let go and build. We headed back around sunset. With lit candles and an open heart, we began the spiritual healing with a guided meditation. We imagined drawing a tree as a child, then being inside it. We pictured the details of the tree and how it changed overtime. This simple meditation uncovered issues we were all having. A tarot reading dug deeper. Tarot cards can lead to many interpretations and a lot of people are skeptical. I believe it’s a great way to see what it sparks inside of you. How it makes your mind wander. From the meditation and the reading, I learned I lacked intention behind my actions and I fight to be in the background, an unnecessary struggle. I was dealing with some heavy unresolved family issues and I knew it was affecting me but I didn’t want to bring negativity to anybody else. I opened up and it was a huge release. Everyone was completely understanding and helpful. I learned that instead of giving energy to an emotionally draining situation I should really let go and harness that energy towards something of value. I also realized that you can find support in unlikely places, like a beautiful hilltop overlooking the night sky of Sayulita. We all heard, really listened and understood each other that night. We walked away with an awareness of what we needed to work on which was empowering and exciting. After our session and gathering of our thoughts a black out took over the whole city. It lasted just a few minutes but was so powerful. It was followed by three more blackouts in the span of twenty minutes. In those moments the city shut down. Silence. It felt as if the blackout was a reset and a reminder that we need that as well. The spiritual healing session served as an emotional reset. It shifted the perception of my problems. I realized we all have varied issues but it’s important to continue to work on our growth and make an effort towards our own happiness. The next day we were refreshed and re-energized from our emotional night. We hiked to a more desolate beach with only a handful of people. The sand burned our bare feet. We ran to the ocean from our shaded sanctuary. The powerful waves took us all by surprise. I tripped over a big rock everyone kept warning me about. I managed to get past the waves and swam in the ocean for a bit. I felt the current starting to take me and I swam back. It was a nice day of reflection and gratitude for everything around us, the trip and each other. With warm salty air & the energy of the moon, I broke barriers, connected deeper & healed parts of myself I didn’t even know needed healing. Through the rhythm of our tears and the strength of our love, I took a leap into the unknown. A leap into myself. I left Sayulita sun kissed and soul full.
