The drive to and from the Trail of 100 Giants was anything but serene. It was snowing the whole drive up and down the mountain. We spun out twice on the way up and found a van in a ditch on the way down. We stopped to check if there was anybody in the van, and quickly afterwards, another truck stopped to lend a hand, too. We and 3 men from the helping truck approached the van only to find it empty. In the ditch, with children's toys all over the floor and the van lights still on, it looked as though the family in the van had already received help. As we parted ways with the people from the truck, we wished each other good luck and safety on our travels. As they left, we stood in the road as the snow continued to fall, feeling in that moment, serenity.
