A leap into the unknown Colombia

Since obtaining my Canadian citizenship in 2017, I have decided to travel more as it is easier to travel on a Canadian passport than one from Mauritius where I'm from with less visa requirements. In December 2019, I decide to take a solo trip to travel from Ottawa, Canada to Bogota, Colombia. I was looking forward to this leap into an unknown capital city which I knew little about so I did my research on things to do and brushed up on my limited Spanish. I also heard there were some protests in Bogota a few weeks prior to my trip but that did not deter me from travelling. Downtown Bogota was my pick to stay at a hotel near museums as my interests. Over the next couple of days, I walked around to discover museums including Botero and Oro as well as found nice spots to eat empanadas and bunuelos. There was also many graffitis in an area called Chapinera where I saw some street artists performing different types of dance until night time. It was also amazing to go up to Montserrate in a cable car which is the best spot to get best views of Bogota from the mountain. During the night time, I went to Zona Rosa as recommended by my Uber driver and local folks I chatted with who said that downtown Bogota is dangerous at night. Zona Rosa was well lit up with lots of nice restaurants and places to dance. One of my friends who lived in Medellin, Colombia was in Bogota for a couple days and so we went out for dinner, drinks and dancing which was a great time discovering local food, drinks and learning some new moves dancing reggaeton which is popular there. Overall, this was an amazing experience and I will keep travelling and discovering new unknown places like these where I can make local connections, learn and grow from the people I meet along the way.
