Sri Lanka? Sounds nice, and just like that I’m on my way. Not knowing what I’d find, I set off on a month long adventure across this beautiful island nestled just east of the Indian coast. From the majestic northern temples, to the deep greens of the central rainforests, and all the way down south to surfers paradise, it seemed a little bit of everything was waiting to be enjoyed. Now this may all sound amazing, but let me tell you, the most wonderful thing about Sri Lanka is that it cured my psoriasis. How, you ask, is this possible! What miracle cure did I find for my unsightly skin condition on the shores of Ceylon? Was it the cool mountain air of Ella? The long hot hikes to hilltop monasteries in Sigiriya? Or was there something in the waters of Hiriketiya bay that swept it away as I surfed? I have no idea. What I do know is that a magical place can make miracles happen, and I’d classify the total remission of acute psoriasis as one hell of a miracle. From the day I touched down just north of Colombo at Sri Lanka’s main international airport, the island nation delighted and surprised me at every turn. The warmth and generosity of the local people, who seemed to smile at every opportunity and relished their chance to help a stranger was almost overwhelming. On what is considered one of the most beautiful train ride’s in the world, from Kandy to Ella, my seat mate, a Sri Lankan farmer named Roy, allowed me to steal his window seat simply because he’d seen this all before. Down south in a region known as Midigama a local woman living behind the guest house I had hired noticed a tear in my backpack. Saying nothing she guided me into her home, patched the bag to perfection and asked for nothing in return. Could it have been the kindness then? Maybe just maybe, it wasn’t the beautiful landscapes and stress melting beaches that caused my skin to miraculously heal. Maybe it was something all together different, a kind of healing of the soul that can only be found in a place so pure as this, stunning Sri Lanka. I hope to see your shores someday again soon, here’s hoping the psoriasis flares up again.
