Never had I thought that I would fly over all of the Pacific Ocean to another Country, Guatemala. As the result of winning the video shooting so that having this precious opportunity to get connections with Maya. Only I have heard that the most famous Tikal pyramid, one of The Seven Wonders of the World, but I learned more than that in my journal. Actually, there are some friends and I went to one of town called San Pedro, La Langua which around the Niño de Lago (Atitlan). It has a special meaning that those citizens around this lake are the children of the lake. Our purpose is learning Spanish here and some activities; such as, kayaking, cooking class and tour of lake, etc. Making me impression is how their sustainable actions in life with the lake. During the cooking classes, we went to the traditional market in order to buy some ingredients for our dishes. Our teacher, Anita, who self-prepared many bambooed shopping bags and fresh-keeping boxes to pack those vegetables instead of bringing those plastic bags, paper bags or one-time packages. To make less trashes and reuse the shopping bags at the same time. I saw local people keep bringing their bambooed bags into daily life to protect their lake without hesitation. With awareness of sustainable development arises, how local people field coffee beans with natural method? I found that coffee beans workers field those beans in SDG12 (Responsible consumption & production) with their land. The land is suitable to field the coffee beans because of they have the volcanoes around the lake to nourish the land and the best environment to coffee beans. Besides, using the falling leaves from the trees themselves to provide nourishment. Even its leaves to package the rice rather than plastic bags. After 45 years, they would cut the coffee beans trees’ branches into shortcut to make them grow even further and stronger. By this natural way to field the coffee beans, they produce the most natural coffee beans with a better quality of life for all. Maya people in Guatemala, has shown their advantages by wearing the traditional clothes—Huipil in their daily life. We can see easily that they are good at handmade weaving with colorful lines and patterns in local culture. There is a bird named “Quetzal” indicated their country species and the name of local money. There are less and less people whom wear traditional clothes as usual, but they do. In my opinion, that is a the most convenient method to marketing your culture by local people, to show what makes them different and makes tourists impressed, and even protects the culture and art –handmade weaving passed down. Sustainable habits could make it happened with natural way just like the culture would go on and on by people’s awareness. What makes me unforgettable is not only the sustainable actions which we can learn to protect our globe, but how they respect nature with heart and their special cultures. During those days, I would forever remember how comfortable experiences are with Atitlan Lake and the warm smiles on Maya peoples’ faces.
