The Cruise Down the Nile

A leap into the unknown Egypt

Me and my family took a 6 hour flight from Manchester to Alexandra, Egypt, for Easter half term 8 years ago, to learn about the history of Egypt. When we arrived, we were transferred to the dock to begin boarding the cruise for the journey to begin. We had a warm welcoming and a tour around the boat; where we saw the swimming pool on deck, buffet area, entertainment place and most importantly, our rooms. The rooms were specially arranged every day, with different animal origami created with the towels, my personal favourite was the Orangutan they had designed. Our first night, we went stargazing in a desert. We learnt about astronomy and the different planets in the sky, I always remember Jupiter was the main planet we spotted. The next day, we went to the Pyramids, which was my favourite day out of them all. It was so interesting learning about different facts about the Pyramids, and exploring inside them. As well as this, we got to visit Tutankhamun's tomb (Valley of the Kings). Tutankhamun was a Pharaoh and all his antiques are held in the Valley, which I was lucky enough to see. That night, there was a competition going on in the entertainment room, where we all had to dress in traditional Egyptian outfits. I wore a white shirt with a belly dancing skirt. The competition was to belly dance and try and win a prize. Shockingly I had won, at just 8 years of age. We won a day trip for free to a small village. To get to this village, we had to take a mini boat from the cruise and sail over to the other side of the Nile. On this trip, I got to experience feeding and petting the goats, who were well looked after by the farmers. On the second to last day, all passengers on board went to see the Great Sphinx of Giza. The Sphinx is a lion with a human face and is thought to have taken part in a Napoleon war (which is a fact I have always remembered). At the end of this trip, we had to walk our way back, following a tour guide, to board the boat. Worriedly, two Egyptian men started to pull me back from my family and so my Dad ended up having to try and pull me away. It has always been said, that blondes are a particular favourite in Egypt. To sum up the holiday, we were all given shirts with our name written in Egyptian and was given a free DVD to relive memories of the holiday, which I still have to this day. Overall, it has to be one of the most extraordinary holidays of my life so far where I got to learn more about the ancient history, and got to leap into the unknown.
