The Futility of Life

A leap into the unknown Nigeria

The baby who was stabbed 16 times at one month old by her mother, Ayobami at 2 months old who was abandoned in a dumpster and left to die. I certainly wasn't expecting to hear all of these when I took a journey to the Nigerian Red Cross Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria. Hearing a motherless babies home, I was quite scared of what to expect. However, teaching the children, telling stories, laughing with them and creating new friendships really opened my eyes to the futility of life. We live life always wishing something was better; almost perfect. We hardly ever appreciate the true value of life. We hardly ever show empathy to others. But, here were children who were very happy despite the harsh realities of their lives. I got to see the world from the eyes of a child. The bubbliness, the innocence yet quiet wisdom of children who were expected by society to be broken yet were not, was a lot of lesson to learn from the children. I got a new and true meaning of life. The baby did not die, Ayobami survived. These children taught me in two weeks more than any teacher could have taught me in my whole life: the true meaning of life - contentment.
