It was not the first time I visited Thailand; but this time I really left my comfort zone back home. A few months before my trip I found an amazing picture on instagram of Khao Sok National Park, with just a sight of it I fall in love with that astonishing picture of rock cliffs covered by nature, clouds touching the top of them, and at the bottom, a lake; a lake from which, in certain areas, trees and smaller cliffs emerge from it. From that moment forward I made my objective to visit Khao Sok at some point of my upcoming trip. That same day, I made a reservation online of the most amazing tree house hotel in the middle of the jungle; and surprisingly it was the cheapest booking of my trip. Months passed by and finally I was in Thailand, visiting the “tourist” cities and enjoying the warmth of the country. When I researched the best way to get to Khao Sok, I realized that it was only two hours away from Krabi, a great place to stay and do some island hopping, so I decided that I would start my journey from there. One night before I left Krabi I found a small travel agency that sold me a one-way bus ticket to Khao Sok for $200 bahts, a price so cheap that it was a no brainer I bought the ticket right away. Finally, the day I had been waiting for arrived; the adventure began. The bus passed for me at the hotel where I was staying, from there we picked up eleven more people; I thought that by picking up the last two people we were going to leave Krabi, but no, we were taken to a house/station on the outskirts of town where there were more people waiting. When we arrived, they told us that this was the meeting point from which all the buses were leaving, so we just had to wait. An hour passed by before our bus finally arrived. As we took the road I realized I’ve made a mistake sitting at the back of the bus, the rode had bumps in every mile, and with every bump I jumped from my seat; furthermore, I discovered why the bus ticket was so cheap: the route had stops in every single town from Krabi to Khao Sok. My trip of two hours became a three and a half hour trip, with bumpy roads and endless stops. I will not lie, after the first hour I hated the experience, I arrived to Khao Sok with a huge stomachache and with a sore, sore body from my jumping experience on the bus. The jungle hotel I booked was outside the National Park, about half hour away, just great, another bad thing of my experience I thought. For visiting the National Park I made a reservation for the next day. With all my troubles I went to sleep; I couldn’t. I have never stayed in the middle of the jungle, after a few minutes the sound of the jungle invaded my room, the noise of animals and mostly insects were so loud at night that you can barely listen to your music at medium volume; after a couple hours I fall asleep like a baby. The tour left the hotel at the break of dawn and I was more than ready to leave. When we reached the park, we arrived at a small port from which we set sail on a longtail boat. The further we went into the lake, the bigger my impression was. My surprise at the size of the lake surrounded by large reefs made me feel insignificant in this world, the greatness of nature captivated me. As I saw the lake, the sky and the reefs, I thought about my whole life, and how I was only a small part of this world. Reflecting on what I really wanted to do with my life, I fell in love with the tranquility of Khao Sok. Today, I miss the journey, Khao Sok and sleeping with the overwhelming sound of the jungle. I will be back for sure.
