Mohenjo-daro(Mount of Dead) Built around 2600 BCE, it is one of the largest settlements of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. I learned about in class4 Book. The lasting impression from the history and culture made me mesmerized whenever I think of – The Great Bath, The Dancing Girl, The Priest King. I always dreamt to go to Mohen jo daro one day. The visit always mesemrised me and take me to the past glory of indus culture. For a visit to Mohenjo daro, the nearest International airport is the Jinnah International Airport Karachi in Pakistan. You can drive down from Karachi which is about 420 km It’s located in the Larkana district of Sindh. The archaeological site has an old, depilated airport which can only handle small crafts. There are 3 direct flights from Karachi every week. A train station is located 11 KM away from the site and rickshaws or taxis can be hired to go to the site. Local buses also run in between and can be taken to reach the site. While visiting Mohenjo-Daro you will realise it as the most prominent archaeological site of the ancient Indus Valley civilization. The word Mohenjo-daro means ‘Mound of Dead’ in Sindhi or ‘Mound of Mohan’.It is one of the world’s earliest cities, contemporaneous to the ancient Egyptian and, Mesopotamian civilizations. Evidence has pointed to existence of trade routes between these civilizations. The Indus Valley Civilization flourished around 2500 to 1900 BC and Mohenjo-daro was most important to the civilization. It spread out over about 250 acreIn 1920 R D Banerjee of the Archeological Survey of India first unearthed the remnants of Mohenjo-daro . He identified the Buddhist stupa and finding an artefact there convinced him of the site’s relevance. Mohenjodaro comprises two sectors: a stupa mound that rises in the western sector and, to the east, the lower city ruins spread out along the banks of the Indus. The Acropolis, set on high embankments, the ramparts, and the lower town, which is laid out according to strict rules, provide evidence of an early system of town planning. The stupa mound, built on a massive platform of mud brick, is composed of the ruins of several major structures – Great Bath, Great Granary, College Square and Pillared Hall – as well as a number of private homes. The extensive lower city is a complex of private and public houses, wells, shops and commercial buildings. These buildings are laid out along streets intersecting each other at right angles; in a highly orderly form of city planning that also incorporated important systems of sanitation and drainage Mohenjo Daro could be as big of a tourist attraction as the Stonehenge in England or Pompeii in Italy. The rich history of our land is something we need to embrace an celebrate. And making the ancient city of Mohenjo Daro into a tourist attraction would be one step towards it. If you want to take deep dig into the history and understand how well the people organiszed the city 5000 years ago visting Mohen jo Daro will give you a live experience of history.
