Solo traveling can be the biggest adventure you will experience if you are open-minded enough. With few Turkish liras in my backpack, I have decided I will hitchhike and try to explore the beautiful sites of Istanbul in this way. Just a few minutes after I started to wave my hand into the air, a car stopped on the road, and that was the moment I had the feeling that I am diving into something exciting. Although I didn't speak the language of the other person, and neither did he, we had a very strong synergy and we became "professionals" in sign language for the rest of the travel. Although I arrived with a bunch of maps, plans, and addresses, I didn't check on them during my stay, because I was introduced to all the hidden corners of Istanbul, the spicy street food, the colorful streets and the seaside parks at Kadikoy where we had picnic until sunset. I would not be able to experience the Turkish culture and the way locals live and interact with each other if I have decided to follow my plans and stay inside my comfort zone. Istanbul is a city that has something for everyone, from traditional customs and beautiful historical mosques to karaoke bars and clubs which make this city of two continents rich and diverse. Often the barriers we have for someone exists only in our minds, so don’t be afraid to approach locals and to prevent yourself from having a friend for a lifetime.
