India is a land of culture, tradition, heritage and most importantly patriotism. After listening that word, we can only remember our freedom fighters who had sacrifice their life to make our nation free from subjugation of the British. Not only did the freedom fighters contribute their blood but also their radical thinking through different poems and stories. There were many renowned writers who are eternal in the pages of history as well as in our heart, but when it comes to Bengal, it is Rabindranath Tagore. The tales of Santiniketan is directly related with the life of Rabindranath Tagore and we can relate many such places which are mentioned in his poems. Santiniketan a small land of peace in the midst of this noisy world, in Bengali we say “Robi Thakurer Desh”. Santiniketan is a small idyllic town in Birbhum district, West Bengal, India. Its about 164 km north from Kolkata. It’s a three-hour journey by train from Kolkata but we can feel the essence of Santiniketan from the train when “baul”, the folk singers perform their traditional music. That music can speed up our excitement about the place. Once we step into Bolpur railway station we will find the ambience a little poetic, we can see the abstract structures and some poetry on the walls. From Bolpur railway station it takes 20 minutes to Santiniketan on small battery driven vehicles commonly known as “toto”. This short journey will not be a boring one because we can see small shops selling handicrafts and paintings on both side of the road. The most exciting thing, when the “toto” passes by the Visva Bharati University campus, is a pathway to the haven for literature lovers. The trees bend, overshadowing the roads with fallen yellow leaves everywhere. It is a very clam surrounding. The rest houses and holiday homes are near the campus area, tourist can walk or take a cycle to the University campus. Visva Bharati University is the most prestigious tourist attraction in Santiniketan. It was founded by Rabindranath Tagore in the year 1921. This concept was pioneered by his father Dabendranath Tagore when he was given a plot of land by the Zamindar of Raipur in the year 1863. The whole campus consists of acers of land with different types of halls and museums. Some spots like “kala bhavan”, “chhatimtala”, “prakriti bhavan” and “sangeet bhavan” increases the prestige of this place. This place is enriched with art, culture, music and education which are inspired by Rabindranath Tagore. We can find the patriotic notes and writings in the form of graffiti. The most interesting spot of this place is the banyan tree which we can find on the cover page of “sohoj path” by Rabindranath Tagore. Kopai river is another famous tourist attraction in Santiniketan. Rabindranath Tagore had described this river in his poem “Amader choto nodi “. A 20-minute distance from Visva Bharati University by “toto”, this river sleeps with its own pride. This river remains dry throughout the year except in the rainy season. Kopai river attract number of national and international tourist throughout the year. We can find a number of small shops selling “Panjabi”, traditional Bengali dress and “Ektara”, musical instrument used by the “bauls”. For the shopping lovers, music lovers and collectors, Sonajhuri forest is the most appropriate attraction. Commonly known as “Khoai” or “Sonajhurir hut”, Sonajhuri takes different look in every Saturday when the small groups of shopkeepers assemble together in the form of a fair which has its own speciality. Cloths with earthly designs, showpieces, paintings and “Ektara” s are being sold in very reasonable prices. Not only local people but also the foreigners have their own stalls. The groups of tribal people performing dance and “bauls” scattered everywhere creating a wonderful chorus of traditional music. This environment will obviously create a memorable moment for someone. Santiniketan has its own form of celebrating Dol, the festival of colours, commonly known as “Basanta Utsav”. Santiniketan represents the country side Bengal with calmness, peace and good people. One must visit this place for a temporary escape from the monotonous urban life.
