There is a moment of peace, a moment of serenity when you sit in silence and listen to the waves crashing, feel the breeze passing over your face, where you can shift your gaze up towards the sky and allow yourself to experience the cleverly thought out painting, in front of your eyes. The Sky is intricate; with brush-like strokes, complimenting colours & the juxtaposition of softness and hardness. It is the beauty of a sunset that overwhelms you, which can be healing and it can take your breath away. There are many places in the world which are unique and special but there is only one place that will give you all of the above and more. It is a place that will offer you peace, tranquillity and balance. This place is magic. It is a tiny island off the east coast of Panama. It is one of many and they are all magic. These islands belong to a group of people, a tribe whose stories are woven into their clothing, their way of life & weathered into their darkened skin which lines their faces and arms. They are the Guna Yala people and their home is sandy, palm tree of the San Blas islands. Every morning, you will wake up from a small woven grass hut, walk barefoot past some wooden tables, straight towards the water, turning to the left you will walk another 500 metres further across the sand and find yourself sitting on a wet soaked log, next to a wooden carved canoe. It is here that you watch & wait for the sun to break. Slowly light begins to dance through the palm trees, bathing the island in a golden aura and ever so slowly the children start to wiggle awake, fires are lit & the smell of cooking aromas pass by you. While you sit and observe, it is now the time to take in the space and enjoy the simplicity of just breathing. Taking it in one breath at a time, the magic of the San Blas. The Guna Yala people will show you kindness, a type of joy that only can come from within. You will find yourself in a space to be fully present, to kick your feet back and enjoy. Eat a simple meal, sleep in a simple hut and interact with just a smile. It is this warmth and openness that comes from just a smile that the magic begins to evolve. Your journey will continue as you find yourself drawn to the edges of the island. Watching the sun twirl and bounce off the surface of the ocean dancing, slowly following its whimsical movements engaging your thoughts for a time on end. As your day shifts to the afternoon, you will begin to realise that this little island puts you at ease. The lack of tourists, amenities and a strong realisation that people choose to live in a way so far removed from many of us today, will cause you to think and pause. There is no wifi, there are no distractions or fancy food. But there is a warming sense of existence and a reminder that we are just human, searching for those intimate experiences, that give us a sense of belonging. There will be a moment on this island where you can choose to forget everything, forget who you are, your thoughts and your reason for existence. Because when it all comes down to it you are a being and a soul. Nothing feels more real than this. The beauty of the island, the beauty of the ocean, the beauty of the palm trees and the beauty of wild electrical storms that pass through. These are experiences that will give you a moment of peace and a moment of serenity. It is a place you can escape from society, to take a break and feel moved. It will excite you, refresh you and let you take a breath again. It will begin your journey of discovery, where you can create a local connection and allow the magic of the San Blas Islands to flow through you.
