Here I am sitting on the floor of Ngurah Rai Airport, Bali, Indonesia. I have no accommodations in place, no specific area or destination in mind, there are rain clouds rolling in and these jeans have adhered to my thighs. So begins Mission: Agoda, Bookings, Google. My brain has officially hit overload. Should I stay near the the beach? Get a villa? Maybe, economy stay? The Mountains? North? South? East? West? Its hard to make a decision with so much paradise to choose from. The next place to pop out will be the chosen one. I have been in and out of euphoria at the scent of incense floating through the air. Two hours later here I am in the same place. I'm beginning to understand having a place to stay is one those details which should be planned beforehand. “Hey, where are you headed?“ I slightly ignore the question assuming it to be yet another taxi solicitation. Realizing the unknown voice had just spoken clear English my eyes part ways with the computer screen. In front of me is a tall lanky man wearing only a backpack, button down polo, khakis and rope sandals. He must’ve been here before.” I retort with as much pseudo confidence I can muster, “Where are you going?”;As if I’d know the destination. “Ubud, you want to split a cab?” Maybe I shouldn't follow a stranger to a place I don't know. (Thought II) I might as well go somewhere I don't know with some who does. “Sure, Let’s do it” I say. He hears my stomach grumble and tells me there’s a cafe we can grab lunch once we reach town. We finagle a taxi with very little language challenge; and we’re on the way. Our ride is filled with exchanges of how we got here, what our homelands are like and what to expect in Bali. Talking to my Aussie taxi mate was as though we’d known each other for a eons. His bright spirit quickly waned my hidden anxiety. There are grandiose white statues with intricate detail standing every few miles. Our driver explains them to be depictions of the gods who watch over the island. Children wave and smile on the back of motor bikes at the sight of us. I watch uneasily as one peels off with 3 children an infant and a mother. This place is my dreams version of New York City. The waft of incense remains steady in the air guiding me deeper into this alternate universe. One hour and 150,000 RP or $12 later and we arrive at Alchemy, A raw vegan cafe with free flowing vibes. We chat over pesto zucchini pasta and veggie quiche while waiting out the rain for AB’s friend. After an hour and a half, In walks a German Goddess. We give introductions then she points me to a market across the way where she says I may find a room. I’m not too keen on staying in a markets back room but with daylight running out and unknown options anything will do. A slender women appears from a doorway at the back of the shop dressed in decorative sarong and beaded shirt; Her hair pinned precisely framing her soft features. There’s a room for me. I follow her around the side of the market where awe slaps me in the face. The market is front to a three story open air mansion! At the head of the foyer there are incense inside of woven palm leaves. Yoni firmly advises to watch my step as these Puja are offerings to the ancestors. They are places in front of businesses and homes for protection. Up the raw iron stairway I am presented a private room and bath, outdoor kitchen area and balcony over looking mountain peaks. The fragrance of warm rain wraps me in comfort as I lay across the king size bed. Impulsively I grab my cell. *Unlock phone* *Double tap home button* *Scrolls through recent apps* There’s my list of places to visit. Alchemy Cafe, is number one on the list of “Food Places”. Synchronicity is sure something. I look forward to what else Mama Bali has in store.
