A few years ago I decided it was time for me to throw myself into the world, find out all I ever read in travel blogs, feel the excitement and fear that I was craving for so long so I decided to go on a Europe trip for a month and a half. I wanted to book an arranged tour, since getting out of my comfort zone was something I was still undecided to do, and I thought going with a bunch of people my age and my country would make it less different for me. Little did I know. Fourteen countries I did: UK, France, Switzerland, Monaco, Italy, Vatican City, Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Germany, Czech Republic, Netherlands. I remember how nervous I was the night before, picking the right luggage, packing the right clothes, trying to fit all in. I needed this to be the trip I dreamt of since I was young, I saw so many times all those landscapes, all those cities, all those monuments in movies that I couldn’t believe I was about to be there in the next few days. Everything had to be perfect. Couldn’t sleep all night, the next day I left home and went straight to the airport, I was about to start the biggest adventure I ever imagined. Got to London after an 11 hour flight, took the train, then the subway to get to my hostel and as soon as I went upstairs from the subway I looked up and there it was, as magnificent and amazing as I ever thought, Big ben, finally. I made it to Europe, I made it to London, I did this, I persuade my dream and it paid off. I had to pinch my arm to remind myself this was real, I was not behind the screen anymore, I was there, in flesh and bones. Tears started streaming down my face. After walking a few blocks, I arrived to the hostel, I would lie if I say I had any clue of how that accommodation even worked, so I did my check in, went to my assigned bed and slept with my clothes on. Didn’t want to wake up anybody, I knew my group was gathering next morning to take our boat to Paris. The next day, I woke up eager to meet my group in front desk at 9 am sharp. So I took my luggage down, and opened the reception door, every face turned around, I could feel how everyone was staring at me. About 30 unfamiliar faces, with unfamiliar accents all speaking. This was my group. It was then when realized I was so excited of this coming trip, I took care of everything, every little detail for it to be perfect, but I forgot to ask more information about the group that was going in this trip. It turned out it was only people from Australia and New Zealand. I am a petite Mexican girl, 5’1, I can understand and speak English quite well but never heard this accent before, much less the slang they use. I knew I looked different and I knew I was getting out of my comfort zone. For real. 45 days and nights eating, sleeping, seeing new places, partying, and adventuring with people I could barely understand. I was terrified. Days went by and several unforgettable moments happened, cabaret night in Paris, skydive in Switzerland, losing part of my budget at Casino Montecarlo, sailing through the islands in Greece, watching the most handsome men in Albania, partying in the biggest club in Croatia, visiting the caves in Slovenia, Oktoberfest in in Germany, the Red District in Amsterdam and so many more I would need several pages to write each and every amazing minute of this adventure. From trying to adapt myself, learning from each person I travelled with to falling in love. The delicious food I try, the astonishing places I saw, the amazing people I met, every second of every minute will always be cherished in my heart. After this trip I realized the fear of the unknown is just a thin line away to the most exciting feeling in the world.
