The Travelers Family Reunion

A leap into the unknown United Kingdom

For decades the Mumba’s and Musalula’s have looked the unknown world as full of excitement, knowledge as well as culture. I was born on February 17, 1997, for the first years of my life I was surrounded by stories of people all over the globe that I was related to but never seen. My dad was part of that list except he came to visit us every month, I honestly thought everyone’s dad did the same. At the age of six, my mother’s mom left the country for the United Kingdom for work, I knew she wasn’t to return for a while and traveling became a reality to me. I would look to the skies whenever I saw a plane passing by, screaming ‘grandma take me, I am here’. Funny as that sounds, some months after my grandma left, my mother’s young sister and brother followed suit, my thoughts about where everyone was going grew larger, I didn’t see them again and yet I was able to see my dad every month, it wasn’t until I learned about the world map that I understood that my dad was able to come home often because he was in South Africa. Eight years old, school starts getting tough I thought to myself, I didn’t know I was in for a huge surprise, my first journey out of my country; out of my continent and to what I saw as the great unknown. Little did I know that that first time onboard would spark my entire life longing, to become an airline pilot, at this point in life I have a bachelor’s of science in Aviation Science and I am working on my master’s degree in Business Administration for the sole purpose of becoming a pilot. Something I can call the ultimate traveling deal. After the visit to the United Kingdom that year we had a few more to come but nothing beats the last visit. It was different, my dad, unfortunately, didn’t make it this time, but it was the adventure of the family. I look at it as the family triangle visit, I will explain. 2015, I moved to the United States for school, 2016 my young brother moved too. The newest addition to the family, my young sister was only five years old and stayed with our parents. Her traveling fever began at Eight as well, her first out of Africa destination, you guessed it, the United Kingdom. Apart from her, was one of my closest cousins first trip out of Africa as well. I call this the family triangle visit because we had people coming from Africa, people coming from the United States, all to meet in the United Kingdom for the best family reunion of all time. Before this reunion, I had not seen my grandma for the four years, and as for my Aunt and Uncle, I last saw then when my young sister was two. Christmas at Grandma’s in Manchester, family celebration activities included telling stories as well as brought back the old family reunion favorite, chocolates everywhere. When I was a kid, I would go nuts for this, which my young sister and cousin did. Moving away was the other talk of the day, we planned to go Visit London for the New Year, most of Us have gone through Heathrow and say I was in London but were we really? Staying two days to see most of London, you would say that’s insane, but I have visited New York in two days too. Yes, we did it. Arriving in London on the 29th, spending two days visiting places I never thought my eyes would ever see, I thought the television made them look better than they were, but I was proved wrong. The British Museum, the Buckingham Palace, Big Ben to name a few, and not forgetting the most talked about bridge growing up in Africa, the London Bridge. Most of the people in my family travel all over the world, not with a group but alone, this trip was so special to me as it proved to me that traveling is in the blood that flows through my veins.
