I had just left the man I loved. A job had relocated him far away and I wasn’t willing to move to his new home. I couldn’t process this so I went to paradise also known as Barbados. I decided to pay my Aunt Betty a visit. I convinced Jesseca and Nia to join me. Betty warmly welcomed me as always. She encouraged us to “get out there and live! “ it was something she’d always said to me. Betty was always tired from work but she had time for her daughters, she always referred to us as the daughters. Betty is married but did not have any biological children. She said that she didn’t need to birth anyone because all children are her children. I was at least 25 but still a child in her eyes. One day the girls and I were sitting in Betty’s kitchen talking about guys and Betty told us to make a list. She said that on this list we should name every single thing we ever wanted in a man. She told us to be extravagant, be unrealistic, ask for everything you could possibly dream of. She gave us each a card to jot it down. Then she told us , when picking a man decide whether he is a twig, a branch, or a tree that way you aren’t wasting your time. That very night We went out again. Every guy that passed by was subject to our new screening process. Twig, twig, eh..branch, two twigs, half a twig. The only trees we saw were full of coconuts. Jesseca did manage to hit it off with this twig that she met. He was pretty handsome but she was struggling to understand what he was saying. I was becoming the bajan translator. I was happy when they exchanged numbers so they could text instead. The next day, I decided to show the girls Bathsheba. It’s a beautiful site deep in the country side with spectacular ocean views. It’s actually quite romantic. I guess Jesseca has told the twig from last night that we were headed to Bathsheba because there he was and standing next to him was a Tree!!! We all turned around when we saw him and huddled like school children. In unison we declared “thats a Tree!” We didn’t even use words to speak after that just noises. We sounded like the bajan roosters that woke us up that morning. He was at least 6” 5 and over 300 lbs. He was built like a giant from head to toe. We were thrilled. We even gave upgraded the twig to an honorary branch member by affiliation with such a tree. The Tree was so polite and proper, he had such old fashion bajan mannerism. I knew immediately what kind of family he was from. He treated everyone with equal respect so it was difficult to tell who he was interested in. However, when he walked up to greet me his feet and his voice stumbled. The sound of bajan roosters could be heard midday now, I was no longer surrounded by friends. As the day went on The Tree continued to make it more pronounced that he had an interest in me. My roosters took every chance to advance and he would show them his intent right away by placing me in the front seat, holding doors open, pulling out chairs, getting drinks and food for all of us. The group that had formed was constantly adventuring somewhere new with a man that seem like he popped out of a book. On my final night in Barbados, he picked me up, alone. He took me on a drive, I had no idea where we were headed but I trusted him ( and my girls were tracking me) I was sure that I was being seduced that night. My friends were staying up for the scoop. When the car stopped he picked me up in one hand and my shoes in the other. I could barely see anything. He laid me down on a blanket that was already there and told me to look up. He planned this. He made no advances. The End.
