In 2013, I went to the Dominican Republic on a mission trip. I, along with six others went on this trip. We had bought an oceanic crate full of supplies for the Dominican Republic (DR). Unbeknownst to us, because we had pharmaceutical items, our cargo would be held up. It was with relief that the rest of the items were allowed to be unloaded. While in Santo Domingo, we were treated like royalty because of our cargo and our willingness to give these items to the people of the Dominican Republic without cost. We met the Vice President of the country, a famous general, several politicians, an eye doctor who was on a mission to help his people see better, his son, several businessmen, as well as many wealthy and influential people in the DR. We were also on their national television because of the nature of our mission. However, it was the journey to San Juan that left the greatest impression. San Juan was beautiful. It was so green. The air was fresh and the food tasted cleaner. Our appetites were increased by the mountain air and we slept well. We worked hard, played harder and loved our mission/ work. We met with many organizations and gave out clothes, literature, eye exams, food, toys and hope. Because it is the agricultural center of the DR, we saw a lot farms, farm workers and unfortunately a lot of poverty. Everywhere, everyone travelled on motorized bikes; Sometimes, whole families. It was unnerving. Yet, unexpectedly poignant and moving. Nothing stopped the spirit of commerce nor the ability to make money. We saw few cars. Being in the mountains, washed away the cobwebs and made one feel achingly alive. I remember our guide saying, Everyone in the van could be Dominican and it was true. Dominicans come in all shapes, sizes and colors. It was refreshing to feel like I belonged and that I was completely accepted. We made many friends on that trip. Something that I could not have predicted. Friends I have still to this day. Our friendship is based on like, love, unselfishness and helpfulness. It is the unexpected things in life that change us. Whether, it is for the best or for the worst. Normally, it is for our betterment. While in the city, (Santo Domingo) there was organized chaos but in San Juan, it felt peaceful. It is the stillness, peacefulness and beauty I will remember the most about San Juan as well as the people. Sidebar: There is a San Juan in the Dominican Republic.
