MAKING A LOCAL CONNECTION HAKUNA MATATA – when I first landed in Zanzibar, all I heard was Jumbo meaning - Hello and Hakuna Matata. Hearing this phrase, made me nostalgic – I was instantly reminded of my favorite movie growing up - “The Lion King”. As the local tour guide packed my belongings into the bus and we headed off to the resort, all around me were boards with the same phrase – HAKUNA MATATA. I was intrigued. I later learned that Hakuna Matata is a Swahili language phrase from Eastern Africa which simply means “no worries” and not only is it the locals’ main motto, but it’s also their life philosophy. Which explains why they’re so calm, patient and so quick to forgive. Hence “HAKUNA MATATA” being their motto and life philosophy. Zanzibar is a beautiful island, with exotic warm ocean current, beautiful coconut palm trees, white sand beaches, and wooden sail boats just swaying at the shoreline for easy access to cruises. The locals are so down to earth and friendly. Made me feel right at home. As I explored the local markets for spices, because, being an Indian, spices are what we love! And Zanzibar is also known as the "Spice Island". I just couldn't wait to indulge. Stepping into their local spice market, I was taken back by the history and diverse culture. Zanzibar is breathtakingly beautiful yet so simple. Spending time with the villages inspired me to appreciate life more. To not take things for granted – if you drive out into town, you’d see how simple their lives are, sitting at the road sides, selling fresh fruits - straight from the trees directly to you, and vegetables. It’s admirable to see how happy they are with such little that they have. Back home, in South Africa – we take so much for granted, we’re so envious of each other. Visiting Zanzibar has changed me, my thinking, my values, it inspired me to give more of myself regardless of what others say to continue being a good person, circumstances shouldn’t change your personality. While exploring the Freddy Mercury museum I came across a local ice cream cart, and being the foodie that I am - it was hard to resist. After indulging in simple life pleasures – I realized my tour guide wasn’t insight. I wandered around the narrow passages, listening to the villages explaining the flags that were above me. Tanzania is a Muslim country, and every year on their Prophet’s birthdays, they hang up religious flags in honor of them - it’s considered to be a holy day and takes about a week to celebrate. Such a simple act of kindness, put a smile to my face. After immersing myself into their rich culture, my tour guide had found me. Concern adorned his face, I assured him that I was completely fine. He then looked around and with a smile on his face he says in a gentle voice “Zanzibar is a very safe place, no one steals here. However, we do follow the Polygamy law – which means a man can have up to four wives, given the first wife accepts”. We both burst into laughter as he suggested I stay close to him and not wander off again. Zanzibar has been one of my most favorite travel destinations. I truly enjoyed myself with the friendly locals. Definitely should be on everyone’s bucket list. One of my most favorite things about travelling to new places is cultural immersion – wherever you go, go with all your heart.
