Back in 2015, i traveled to Nagoya, Japan. I was a junior high student, traveled in group to attend a Natural Disaster Youth Summit. I was so numb because it was my very first trip to Japan. I saw my friends learned lots of japanese, which i dont. Instead i learnt portuguese for an upcoming Brazilian trip. On our second day, we went to a smaller city near Nagoya called Toyota-shi. It was very windy and cold since midst january is still winter. We had our bus journey for 1 hour straight. After we reached our destination, we were placed in Shonen Shizen no Ie, or shortly a dorm. I didnt expect to meet lots of kind japanese students. There, they showed me the culture of shared baths. At first it was completely awkward, as a contrast to our culture, but as days went on i can adapt well. This girl, Nao Kawakita, has such pearly both mind and looks. I adore her. We never been in a project together, but i managed to talk to her anyway. Shes lonely, and shockingly speaks english fluently. I asked her why shes alone, she said because she came from another city. No one is friendly towards her. I dont even know why. On our third day, i taught few english in a local junior high school. It was so fun, and had a cool lunch with the remaining students. I felt something different. They're very heartwarming and kind, so kind that they even guided me skin to skin on how to use chopstick properly. Im not used to japanese culture since im not one. Its awesome how theyve managed to put hygiene first in order to create a clean and healthy environment. Lets see the way students are prohibited to wear their shoes at school. Instead, they must change the shoes to leather slippers. I continued my friendship with Nao for the last 8 days. We exchanged cultures, traditional games, foods (i cooked for her) and she even introduced me to her parents. I introduced her to my group and my teacher of course. It was such beautiful moments that i couldnt forget we tasted each other's cat crackers we got from a violin and taisho koto concert. What i urge to tell you is that, i socialize better through travel and outdoor activities. No wonder that i could keep my friendship with Nao until nowadays. If i had more time and money, perhaps i will revisit her to spend more time because i really enjoy spending time like that. Through travel, we found meaningful friendships, met new people whod just talk without minding anything, and blend in to local culture without the fear of being judged. I aspire to be a journalist, perhaps someday i get to live the dream of travel, write, share, and empowering women i can meet on the journey.
