Marilyn started excited to be sitting in a window seat. She found herself bouncing in her seat as the flight attendants went through the safety information. As the plane backed up from the gate, her hands began to sweat. She glanced around at the faces of the people around her and images of the plane crashes flashed into her mind. Trying to catch her breath, she stared at the window and watched the people walking around the tarmac and she convinced herself that those people were not worried and that meant she shouldn’t be either. Flying was nothing like Marilyn thought it would be. The plane slowly made its way over to the runway and once it was in place, Marilyn expected to stare out the window and watched the world slowly get smaller. Then the plane took off and felt her body being pressed into her seat. Her eyes flickered over to the window and she saw the runway. She blinked then the city of Portland looked like a map on a rug, it was small enough for a child to step over it. Sliding the window closed, Marilyn laid her head back on her seat and closed her eyes. I am going to be alright. Nobody else is freaking out, this is normal to them. I can do this. Marilyn gave herself a pep talk for the first half-hour of the plane ride and then she drifted off to sleep. When she woke up, the pilot said something about how they were starting to descend into New York City. Curious to see how high up in the sky they were, she wanted to open the window, but she was also afraid. Then the man next to her tapped her shoulder and Marilyn’s whole body shook. “Sorry to scare you,” he said, “would you mind opening your window? I want to take a picture and I love seeing the clouds.” Marilyn nodded and opened the window. The sunlight burned her pupils. Once they adjusted to it, she couldn’t take her eyes away. The clouds looked like a whole bunch of cotton balls. The rays cut through the light blue sky. The man took a couple of pictures and thanked Marilyn, she kept the window open and stared out into the sky. Then buildings and bridges come into view. Sitting back into the seat, her heart fluttered with excitement. It was her first time out of Maine and she was ready to be out of the plane.
