I have always been very active in my life. However, this one time exceeded everything I have done before. I have always spent a lot of time close to the ocean, so I kind of grew up in and around the water. This might explain what led a friend of mine and me to realize that stupid spontaneous idea that once popped up in our head. It was just a normal day on the Caribbean island of Bonaire, like any other for most people. Unlike for us. We tested our limits. There is a smaller island called Klein Bonaire right next to the main island, about six square kilometers in size. Our trip started with a kayak paddle from Bonaire‘s Marina to the coast of its little counterpart. There we pulled up the kayaks, took a last sip of the most saccharated drink I ever consumed and off we went. Our aim was to swim around the whole island in one time. The only equipment we had: a mask and this absolutely taste buds dazing isotonic drink. Starting off, we had the current against us. However, it was still fun and games as we were blessed with rays, turtles and fish all over the place. After a while though, we found ourselves in a field of jellyfish. Not the dangerous ones of course, but the little stings still made us try to flinch from them. We must have looked like drunken dolphins performing a show. After almost half the distance and two and a half hours of constant swimming against the current, I already felt grumpy and regretted the idea. We reached a spot blessed by the beauty of Mother Nature, with late afternoon sun rays touching the surface of the water, thereby turning it into a golden cover. As we are both also very passionate about photography, we took some moments to dive down and look at it from below. Together with the glowing coral, it formed an unforgettable sight. After three hours, the sun already began to set. The last tourists were getting picked up by the boats, with us still having a long way to go. After swimming for three hours non-stop, you start to move more like a machine than a human being. Every movement was more out of instinct and only my strong will made me continue. We could have stepped out of the water at any moment. We just didn’t. During one or two times while catching breath I noticed the beautiful sunset and how the pink, orange and purple competed in coloring the water around us. When it turned dark, I eventually had lost the fun about it. I started to freeze, I could not see where I was going and constantly feared to run into a coral. My friend warning me that at night the really nasty jellyfish came out did not improve the situation. At that time the only thought in my head was „why?“. When we reached our starting point I did not even say a word. I just climbed into the kayak and cannot tell how I managed to get back to the main shore, with a current as well as wind bedeviling my life and only a slight moonshine lighting the way. I probably managed to say goodbye to my friend, then got back to our apartment where my mum was awaiting me. I have never been so happy to see her in my life. She helped me when I freaked out in the shower because I could not get my hair disentangled. She helped me washing my hair three times with it still smelling like fish after it. Every body part of mine seemed to smell like fish. I probably transformed into one somewhere along the way. And then I ate the biggest plate of pasta in my whole life. A day later I was already smiling again and very happy to have accomplished such an exceptional challenge and gained this unforgettable experience.
