It was unexpected expedition, as a friend insisted to explorer new place as he has off in office. I took call and planed a trip to Kounsarnag Aharbal (a High Altitude Lake) located in Shopian Kashmir india (Himalaya Pir Panjal Range) .This Lake was not open for trekking, but locals used to go for cattle rearing in summers. We were not sure about the route and we could not find much information. We three friends start our travel Friday afternoon and reached to base camp Aharbal around 8pm. Nature was amazing with sound of wind and waterfall that is one of the biggest in area with lush green surrounding. It was before sunrise we start getting ready for the track and had heavy bag packs with tent, food and other necessary items. We started walking, later some local people joined us, who were accompanied with horses, and cattle .they were going to nearby village. It was steep at beginning and rough trek. While walking, I enquired that how much time it will take us to reach, he replied with smile that, “I only visit once in my life and it was very long, tough to go and it will take you two days by this speed”. I was eager to get plentiful information regarding route, culture, and habits of the people. He explained about the hardships especially in winters (with almost 7 to 8ft snow). we crossed a beautiful stream and we came to know that the source of water was kounsarnag our destination and we have to follow stream upwards. A small village came in our sight and local travels have to go there. We had breakfast and then moved ahead as this was the last village. After walking, we left green forest and came across nature’s beauty with rocks, stone beside the river. It was again very difficult to walk on and this time with sun at its peak. The mountains were naked from both sides and in between, it was a stream with rocky path. As it was clearly, visible that track was quiet long and nature was cut off from rest of the world with soothing silence. We persistently walked until afternoon, we find dead end, as we were supposed to walk on the opposite side of river. Now we had to go back around 3 km then cross the river, which was running fast. It was quiet frustrating and we were exhausted. We stopped and took some meal. as one of us was rethinking about trip “whether we should go ahead or not, as we have limited food and resources with us”. Both of my partners gazed at me. After taking deep breath, I decided to move ahead and crossed the river. We reached at top of the mountain and we find some cattle that brings a bit of hope. After walking down we find some nomadic and we rushed towards them and until then sunset was near. We spend some time with them and had tea. From them we came to know we would not be able to reach our destination. It was beautiful meadow with small children playing. We start brisk walking, as we had to cross another mountain before sunset. I was looking at sun as it was changing its color to golden that effected color of stones and mountains that relaxes my mind. However, we were in hurry and were not able to find accurate path of our destination. Now it was almost dark. We saw a light far away and we rushed there and it took us 1 hour to reach their. We knocked door of house made of stones and mud.An old man came out and ask us to get in and he offered tea. Then we camp outside of his house. We cooked food, and then went to sleep. We were having great feelings as we were close to lake. Still we have to cross a mountain that was very high. In morning, we heard some voices, we woke up and old man asked about our well being. After having tea, we packed our bags. We discussed to climb the mountain without bag packs as it was expected to reach top of mountain within 4 hours. We kept belongs to old man and start climbing. After hard climb we reached on top, the fist view of downhill was, refreshing, and we forget every hardship. It was worth ,the blue water in between white mountains from all four sides of lake with sun rays on lake reflecting and giving rainbow colors. It was surprising that there was no exit of water and was going under the mountains and down the mountain it was exit of water. We did not believe, that finally we find this place.
