I was sixteen when my parents decided to go on a three day trip to Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. Our family consisted of me, my parents and my two younger sisters. I loathed family trips, as it only ended in a glorious fight, mostly between my parents. But this time it was me versus the whole family. We vacated our luxurious hotel room at close to 9.30 am and got inside our car after a lot of struggle with the luggage. My father announced that we are headed to Dhanushkodi which was located at the south eastern part of the Pamban Island and also the place where we could eat a lot of my father's favourite food, fish. On road my first sister said something disturbing and all I could remember was launching into a wrestling fight with her in a moving car. My parents shouted and screamed at me trying to stop me from hitting my sister. A few minutes later I calmed down a bit. But all of us were crying like a tragic play has just ended. A few minutes again had passed when my father stopped the car to take a break, in front of a lot of slender looking trees with long leaves. Both sides of the road was covered with these trees. I got out first, almost hating this trip and hoping my parents would forgive me very soon. I walked towards the trees standing on pure white sand. I was happy to feel the clean sand fresh air on my tear dried face. So I started walking away from them and went deeper into the woods. Unmistakably I heard the sound of waves. I walked a bit more and saw the most divine sight my eyes have seen. It was a beach with pure white sand and copper sulphate blue waters. The sea looked more like fresh water directly poured from heaven. There was a couple sitting at one end and no one else. A tiny boat with white sails, painted in green and blue sailed at the horizon. For a minute I couldn't believe what I saw. For a girl who spent her entire life living amidst the dirt and chaos in a metro city, a sight like this was almost unreal. I ran back to my family screaming "Its like in movies! Its like in movies!". My family couldn't hold the excitement either when they saw the scenery. They instantly forgot about the fight and was asking me to click as much pictures as possible. The waves in this beach, unlike other beaches, moved in a light graceful manner. I promised myself no matter wherever I go, I will visit this heavenly place, handwoven by God Himself, once again, before I die. For a moment it was not that hard to believe that Lord Ram and his companions built a bridge to Sri Lanka from this place, as only a God can create such beauty in such simplicity. The true artist! Interestingly, no other humans who have been to Dhanushkodi have found this mysterious and incredible beach, though they have seen those slender trees on both sides of the road and the beaches that stink of fish in proper Dhanushkodi. It was due to this unexpected discovery I started loving travel. It made me realize that travelling was not just about sightseeing, but it was also about discovering new places and most importantly discovering oneself. It was this experience that opened my eyes to the good things around me and never again me and my family fought with each other or cursed the mess that we created, during a trip. And instead we started embracing every second in our journey, even the mess!
