Our next destination was Kagoshima. We didn’t book any hotel there but we were welcome to surf on somebody’s couch. At least that was what Dana and I were thinking. Three days ago I still messaged with our friend in Kagoshima, but the day of arrival he didn’t seem to answer my messages. We decided to be patient and not to let this event ruin our plans. So we headed from the train station to harbor because this should be the place to enjoy the fireworks. Once a year, like in many places in Japan they organise firework festivals and we were these lucky girls to experience this. It seemed everyone prepared nicely by putting plastic sheets on the floor and we figured out they were not meant for our butts, but for local butts. So while we kept on searching for some space in between the sheets we stumbled upon a Japanese couple. They were from Miyazaki and also unjapanese unprepared like us. Because we had this connection we decided to stick together to find a nice spot. After being sent away a couple of times, because we were sitting too close to their reserved spot a woman invited us to join her site. There we were sitting like kings and queens, watching the spectacular fireworks. I love Japanese language and Japanese songs and to see them combined with the beautiful fireworks was like a dream coming true. I felt a small tear welling up in the corner of my eye when suddenly the question came… Where are you girls staying tonight. I felt a bit ashamed to say we didn’t have any place to stay so I said: “don’t worry, we will find a manga kissa.” A manga kissa is a café where people can order drinks and read Japanese cartoons. These places are open 24/7 and have comfy chairs so for a small amount of money it’s possible to stay during the night. The girl named Shion looked at me and said that the chances were really small to find a place in an internet café since it was super crowded. I tried to calm my mind by the thought that the sun will rise tomorrow anyway, but the couple came with an idea. A friend of them was living close so they tried to call him and ask if we could stay at his place, but he didn’t answer his phone. Then they called the father of this boy and at some point it was arranged, we got a place for the night. After walking a few blocks we arrived at the student flat. It was a small room of maybe 80 square meters with a one person bed, coffee table and a two person bench directly on the floor. Okey, maybe I expected a bit more than this. But the fact that these people went through so much trouble to at least let us stay at a safe place is so unbelievable friendly. Still now I don’t have any words for it. We managed something with the bench and our bags and actually it wasn’t bad at all. And I didn’t even mention the air conditioning, shower and we got this amazing story.
