“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together” - Vincent Van Gogh When i was small, I always thought that I would grow up making a big difference in life. But when I actually grew up, i realized that the biggest difference i made is the discerning of getting inspired to do little things to help people around me and being happy with just any amount of impact it has on them. In that process, i learn a lot of things for myself. Sometimes i fail and make no impact but eventually, I still grow to become a better person. At the end of the assignment, our students gave us some appreciation notes but honestly, the best rewards to me are those candid moments: - When i saw the light in my student’s eyes after teaching her a new sentence and she turned to her friend to show off:”I understand!!!” - When my students tried different ways to explain to me what kefta kebab is made of with their very little English (imagine how hard it was to communicate without a common language) - When I managed to encourage a shy student presenting in front of the class simply by making a lot of jokes to make her comfortable (something that i dont usually do as im a serious person at work) - When I turned a “liar” into a “lawyer” simply by correcting his pronunciation - When i could make a student sing “My heart will go on” by offering to sing together with her. After the class, she asked me privately “teacher, do you really think i can sing well?” - When my whole class sang an Arabic song for me which i had no clue what it means and why they kept laughing when they were singing it. The time we spent on this project was short. It made me ask myself about its impact on students when I was reflecting. But after talking to a regular student, seeing her notebook with a collection of lessons from all past volunteers and seeing how good her English was, my belief was reinforced: “Big difference is indeed the combination of small impacts from all of us”
