I’ve visited Kerala numerous times but never to Fort Cochin, and it completely mesmerized me. A small town that is heavily influenced by colonization and natural beauty. It was decided that we would go there via ferry because of the trivial reason, it’s fun. As we enter Fort Cochin, all my senses were thrilled. The vibrant colors of the sky and earth and stores filled with a spectrum of things I needed in my life. I shopped more than I anticipated to. even the door knobs thrilled me. The fresh scent of the beach and freshly baked goods. The food was primarily western with local inspired flavors that delightfully pair well together. Sugarcane juice with a hint of ginger was my go to. As we walked, we heard music that convinced me to dance, classic music with a reggae twist. We danced as we sipped our coconuts. The breezy beach and the feel of sand under my feet. But there’s more to this town than just music and food. We start discovering the historic side of Fort Cochin; the Jewish synagogue established in the 18th century, the original tomb of Vasco de Gama and the prison where some of the most notable signatories of India were imprisonments during the Cold War. Every step we took, we dove deeper into a juxtapose of culture, history and emotions. And I did what I always do when I’m overwhelmed by my senses, I stop for a second and closed my eyes and in that moment I felt complete. P.S. don’t repeat our mistakes. A day is enough. I would definitely rent a bike to make the travel easier and exciting. Do not overeat in one place, Fort Cochin is home to some of the most exciting flavors. Must buys; the flowy vibrant clothes, the oud or perfume, colorful knobs (absolutely worth it), the tiny wooden elephant. And finally, keep your straw hat and sunglasses, the sun tends to be too bright.
