A leap into the unknown Indonesia

Around 2 years ago, I planned my short trip to Yogyakarta. Since my mom comes from the Central of Java, I often come there for family events. I'm currently living in East Java which is 400km away from Yogyakarta. It took only 2 hours by car but for this trip I wanted to try another way without seeing the GPS that always tells us to take the main street. The reason why I don’t want to take the main street because I wanted to try some foods from the cities i passed by. After 5 hours riding, I was lil bit confused to find the main street because I was too tired and wanted to take a rest soon. Since my purpose was to try some new foods, finally I found something interesting around the place I parked the car. If you don't know about Indonesia culinary, every region has their own tastes. For example if you eat Padang food (rendang) they put a lot of coconut milk and spicy chili to make the perfect taste. But it's different if you come to Central Java. Central java culinary is known as one of non-spicy food in Indonesia. I’m a food lover that’s why I dedicated to try new foods I have never tried in Central Java. Seeing the poster’s picture made me wanting to buy many foods from that seller. I saw big word “KERIPIK” on the picture. Keripik means chips. The price for one pack was only 5000 rupiah. It’s about $0,35 USD for one pack. So I dedicated myself to buy 5 packs because I always need something to eat during a trip. After paying the chips, I went to my car and tried them. I was like “wow I like it”. I wondered, does the seller sell it online or not? After 5 minutes leaving the stall, I gave my mom my chips. She was pensive and looked at the chips instead of eating them. I asked her why and she asked me back “Don’t you see something wrong on the chips ?“. I did not get what she mean because I thought there was no something wrong with the chips and I enjoyed eating them. She told “I think it’s a grasshopper”. I was shocked and asked her am I okay if I eat them. She said grasshopper is also a traditional food. Some countries in Asia also make them as a chips like the chips I ate. After searching about the chips, I found that Thailand people also consume them as chips. For your information, grasshopper contains high protein, calcium, magnesium, and ect. So it’s okay to be consumed. I’m thankful to know this culture. Culture is not only about the difference taste in each regions but also the diversity of ingredients.
