Travelers must hold a policy before a storm impacts travel for coverage to apply

Media Release: United States - If you’re travelling to the United States this northern summer, be warned: the U.S. hurricane season is here, which is a good reminder to consider buying travel insurance at the same time travelers book flight, hotel and tour arrangements.
Once a hurricane or natural disaster has been identified, it is no longer an unexpected event and travel insurance coverage may be limited for that wild weather.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)¹ has predicted a 40% chance of a near normal hurricane season, and a 30% chance of an above normal season. The prediction includes a range of 12-17 named storms including 1-4 major hurricanes (categories 3-5).
“If a hurricane derails your travel plans, travel insurance coverage may offer cover for trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay,” said Christina Tunnah, General Manager of Marketing and Brands, World Nomads. “Hurricanes are becoming stronger and more frequent, increasing the likelihood of loss from this type of event.”
- If a hurricane causes complete cessation of travel services at your departure point, you can make a claim for cancellation or trip interruption expenses
- You may also have coverage for trip cancellation if a hurricane makes your home or destination accommodation uninhabitable
- If a hurricane or other weather event delays your trip, you can make a claim. Benefits may include reimbursement for basic expenses like transport and accommodation incurred because of the delay

“International visitors to the USA, who may who change flights in the South or Eastern parts of the U.S. en route to their final destination, should consider this when making travel arrangements,” Ms Tunnah said.
