Whether you’re hiking up Mount Kilimanjaro, trekking to Base Camp or heading out a weekend walk in nature, World Nomads travel insurance may help if an unexpected event tries to derail your next hiking trip.

Insurance designed by adventurers, for adventurers

As passionate hikers ourselves, we’ve designed our plans to cover hiking from the most intrepid trek in the mountains to a lazy weekend hike. We offer cover on some of the world’s most famous hikes and 150+ other sports, activities and experiences including:

  • The Inca Trail
  • Trekking in Nepal
  • Mount Kilimanjaro
  • Torres Del Paine
  • Camping, scrambling, tramping and backpacking (height restrictions may apply)
  • Rock climbing and mountaineering (some plans only)

We offer two plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs and that matches your specific hiking and trekking plans. Depending on your Country of Residence and your chosen plan, an upgrade may be required to include trekking, hiking, camping and mountaineering at certain altitudes.

Be aware that terms, conditions, limits, exclusions may apply. Read the policy wording carefully to choose the right plan and adventure sport option for your hiking trip. If you have any questions about your policy, just ask us.

What’s covered for hiking?

Whether you’re dusting off your boots for a few hours on the trail or going on a multi-day expedition to a far-flung corner of the globe, our policies may cover you for sudden and unforeseen events that could affect your travel plans.

World Nomads offers cover (up to the policy limits) for:

  • Emergency overseas medical: if you fall and sprain your ankle whilst hiking and need medical attention, we offer emergency medical coverage so you can get the treatment you need.
  • Evacuation cover: your hiking adventure may be far away from medical facilities. With our cover, you could get transported to the medical facility best for your care, subject to approval from our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. If your injuries are worse than first thought, you could be repatriated back to your Country of Residence.
  • Baggage protection: dropped your camera on the trail and damaged it? Our gear coverage may help with repairing or replacing damaged, lost or stolen items.
  • Trip cancellation: if your trip is cancelled due to an unforeseen event such as illness, you may be able to recover travel expenses, depending on your plan and Country of Residence.
  • Natural disaster: if a severe weather event or natural disaster puts a stop to your trekking adventure, or your destination is affected by extreme weather, we may offer coverage if you can’t use your booked accommodation or need to move to a safer location.

What’s not covered?

While there are several things we can offer coverage for, there are also things we just won’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to government ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure.
  • Any pre-existing medical condition unless otherwise expressly stated in your policy.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed as covered in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads or where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Expenses you incur after you return to your Country of Residence.
  • Unattended baggage or personal items.
  • Working or participating professionally in any activity or sport.

This is not a full list of what is and isn’t covered, so please check your policy for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Top tips for your hiking adventure

To make the most of your time on the trail, you might want to keep the following tips in mind:

  • It pays to be prepared: check the weather, check your equipment, and check the credentials of any instructors and guides – if they aren’t up to scratch then reconsider if it’s a smart move to go.
  • Get hike fit: hiking requires a certain amount of strength and stamina, and in some cases such as the Inca Trail, the ability to handle altitude. Be sure you are physically capable of it.
  • Be responsible: exercise responsibility when deciding on your hiking trip. Does it suit everyone’s experience level? Are you using an accredited tour operator? Make sure to wear appropriate safety gear. Some activities require you to use accredited operators and specific safety gear, so be sure to check your policy wording carefully. If you’re not sure if something is covered, contact us.
  • Keep your receipts and paperwork: any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases. Keep these with you in printed or digital form if you intend to make a claim.
Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.
