How may the Coronavirus impact your travel plans?

At the time of writing, new cases of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) continue to be diagnosed around the world and it is a rapidly evolving situation. If you are planning on traveling to China you should be aware many countries are restricting or banning travel to China and/or Wuhan in Hubei province, where it is believed the virus originated.

If you are planning on traveling to Asia or transiting through or near it, please check any travel advices issued by the country in which you live and monitor the situation through local and international media as it may affect your travel insurance policy.

Concerned about your travel plans and how Coronavirus might affect it?

  1.  Contact your airline, cruise or tour operator to check if tourist services are affected.
  2.  If you need to change your travel arrangements, contact your airline, cruise company or travel agent for assistance in the first instance.
  3.  Refer to your policy wording for more detail or contact our Customer Service Centre to discuss your plans before making any changes. All policy terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions apply.
  4.  Injured or ill? Contact the emergency assistance team as soon as possible. Their details are listed on your Certificate of Insurance.
  5.  In the event of a claim covered by your policy, you must do everything you can to minimise and reduce the cost of the claim and provide all supporting documentation of the event and expenses incurred. If you intend to submit a claim, please complete the claim form and if you need help doing this, contact us.

If you have flu-like symptoms, such as fever, cough, tightness of the chest or shortness of breath

If you are ill and need emergency assistance, please seek medical help immediately and call an ambulance if needed. Contact our Emergency Assistance team who can help you locate medical help, authorise payment of medical expenses and update you on local advice.

What to do if there are cases of COVID-19 in the region that you’re traveling in

  • All travelers should follow local authorities’ advice and keep updated via local media and reports on what is happening. This includes following their advice on where to go and what to do, including if they require you to wear any safety apparatus such as face masks.
  • Avoid all high risk areas where there are large crowds of people and in particular avoid farms, live animal and seafood markets, and areas where animals are slaughtered, including avoiding contact with animal secretions or droppings.
  • Use hand sanitiser and wash your hands regularly with soap and water.
  • Consider purchasing a face mask for your travel, although it is unknown if it will reduce your risk of exposure to the novel Coronavirus.
  • Contact your airline or travel company for information about changes to flight services.
